It was the toughest read of the three, I thought.

I guess I'll read Tortilla Flat soon.

These are the three best. Cannery Row after that.

I just one click ordered Tortilla Flat from Amazon. Halfway across America, another bookshop clerk just died.

If you're ever in Providence, go to Tortilla Flats.

I had five contenders for favorite Steinbeck, and it wasn't easy to choose

Gillian Flynn is a horrible writer, but she correctly says in the foreward that McNamara's gift is in finding the humanity in her subjects. It's true. This one is creepy as hell, but it transcends the lurid crime novel tropes by virtue of the victims' lives being so colorfully fleshed out.

You know what was weird about that intro? Her references to the text all happened in like the first 50 pages. It's like she didn't even finish it.

Ha, i'm only on about page 50, and i'd say you're right.

One time a girlfriend gave me East of Eden for Christmas but I got about 100 pages into it and sold in on Amazon instead.

Anyway, top ten, not necessarily in order:

2666 (Bolaño)
White Noise (DeLillo)
Beloved (Morrison)
Ulysses (Joyce)
The Emigrants (Sebald)
Swann's Way (Proust)
The Awakening (Chopin)
The Sonnets (Berrigan)
Ficciones (Borges)
Suspended Sentences (Modiano)

A great friend of mine started reading East of Eden for the first time a few months ago. He carries it with him everywhere now. He fucking loves the hell out of it. I still haven't read it.

What's your margin between 2666 and The Savage Detectives like? Mine is razor-thin and they flip-flop from time-to-time.

I promised myself that I would re-read all of Bolano's books when I finished my degree. Still not finished.

This has remained extremely consistent over the years. I like that about you.

I go back and forth too but I think at the end of the day, I like TSD better but I think about 2666 more often. Especially the passage about the thieves, the minor works, and the masterpieces. I'm about to start my degree but the nice thing about comp lit is that I don't have to drop Bolaño.
