The manuscript of Ulysses is one of the most amazing and odd items in Literature.

I started that book a year or two ago and had to stop reading it. Haven't gone back to it since. Maybe one day.

I kind of want to see if there is an audio book version.

On Bloomsday, Collum McCann gathers friends, other writers, and fans together to read through the book at this bar in NYC. I'd like to hit that up one of these years.

Read that article I posted! It's all about giving it another shot if you've started and stopped.

The AV Club has this nice article up on the 100th anniversary of the first appearance of Ulysses (in serialized form--the book didn't come out until 1922), and it's basically an overview for people who have either tried to read it or wanted to and always been turned off, explaining why they should give it a go. It includes this fantastic summary: "The plot mostly consists of a dude walking around, thinking about things, and occasionally cranking his hog."

Ulysses, in other words, is a justification of the effort it takes to read Ulysses.

Is not a ringing endorsement. In fact, that makes me want to never look at the book again.

BUT I can ignore a dumb sentence and appreciate the rest of the article. I know I'll revisit the book one day. It's just a matter of when. The right time will find me. Of that I am certain.

I'm not into true crime very much at all, but I've heard so many good things about Michele McNamara's "I'll Be Here In The Dark" that I decided to give it a shot. I'm about 1/4 of the way through and it is gripping, terrifying, disgusting, etc. It's great.

So "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" was very good, but suffered in similar ways to all posthumous texts--it really petered out by the "end." I can only imagine where her research would've gone in the next few years. Definitely still worth a read if you're into crime stuff.

Based off a pretty rando Twitter recommendation, I'm going to read "The Manual of Detection" by Jedediah Berry.

I got to page 37 and never went back.

Someday maybe.

Bloomsday is a huge big deal here. Does be fun seeing all the Uber fans dressing up and walking around town quoting the book :)

Bought two books yesterday...

A used hardback copy of "2 Prospectors: The Letters of Sam Shepard and Johnny Dark" (which is apparently out of print) and "Paris Nocturne" by Modiano.

I'm still about 50 pages from the end of "Exit Ghost" but once I finish that, I'm totally diving into "Paris Nocturne."

A) forgot about the book called "It" so I was like, "wtf man"
B) I loved the way the book ends, and that's all I'll say.

I haven't read any of his books yet, but they're on my list. I read a short piece he wrote on Dungeons and Dragons once and it was good.

Wolf in White Van is outstanding. I highly recommend it. And it's a fairly short read, too. But it's full of character and ideas.

Neeeeevermind, this was a different author. Ed Park. Highly recommended, too.
