FYI The Believer just made its entire archive free on its new website.

Is that a magazine or something? I'll check it out.

Stephen King's On Writing is the best. Get that.

Also, "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott and the Hemingway On Writing books are good, too.

The Artist's Way is fantastic if you want homework and practical experience. It might be a bit too new agey for you though.

I think I've read those except Anne Lammott's one. The Stephen King one is great, and I'm not even a huge fan. But I love that book.

I think my mom bought me The Artist's Way once. Can't remember if I ever read it. I think I did. I'll probably re-read it.

How is that fuzzy math? 11 years, 420 books, that's less than 40 books a year

I just checked Goodreads and since I started actually tracking books read back in 2015, I've read 524 books.

I like to read. [/shrug]

After getting all those vacation reading recs from you guys I ended up only reading 10% of a book I had already started before vacation. Reading with a 3 y/o around all the time is goddamn next to impossible.

That's alright. You've got a good list for next time now.

Started Melmoth by Sarah Perry yesterday. I won a copy of it from Goodreads so I figured I should move it up in my queue.

So far it's a very different read than what I've been used to this summer. Is this what a good book looks like? :)

I'm about half way through Needful Things. It's top tier Stephen King so far. Excellent, excellent read. This motherfucker knows how to tell a story, goddamn!

Got to meet one of my favourite authors the other day. John boyne. He wrote the boy in the striped pyjamas, but he also wrote my favourite book in years, the hearts invisible furies. If you haven’t read it do yourself a favour. It’s brilliant.
His new one is called a Ladder to the sky. He signed my copy and I’m gonna have to buy another one cos I wanna keep this one pristine :)

I seldom read fiction anymore, but I'm really enjoying Lincoln in the Bardo currently.

Imagine the last case of the Scooby gang was a real monster and they grew up and then 13 years later go back to find out what actually happened and then suddenly it's Cthulu-time, that's what you get here.

There's some weird writing styles going on - it will switch the dialogue would change from standard quotation marks and dialogue tags to script style in the middle of a scene. There are multiple 4th wall references like "the monster blah blah blah and didn't even survive this paragraph" or another part where it's talking about monster Mu (as in the Greek letter) and then it says "getting back to Mu from four lines ago". There's even a part with a monster (as in monsters and the sheer size of the crowd) fight that is at least a page long and is one sentence. It gives it a frantic style that I could appreciate but I also skimmed because I don't care who punches who where or slices this or that appendage off when it's this frantic. It was a little busy in that regard.

I think when I'm done with it - I'm right near the end - it'll probably be a 3.5 out of 5. It has some decent humor and the way he turns a phrase has me frequently re-reading sections just to enjoy them again. "The corner chaise lounge was for catatonics. The sofa was a sort of UN demilitarized zone, an upholstered Jerusalem that members of different creeds reluctantly shared during interbellum periods." Which leads me to this review I'm reading on Goodreads:
Quote:
From the beginning, the way that Cantero chose to describe or word particular scenes became bothersome. I began to feel rather unintelligent: 'sotto voce'd', 'perennial kawaii smile', 'Byronian face', 'Greenwich parallel of Eternia'. Umm, HUH? Maybe I should know what some of these mean, but without looking them up I simply passed right over them, not a clue.
It's made funnier that she mentions in the previous paragraph that she liked She-Ra but then she doesn't get Greenwich parallel of Eternia. Also he's from Barcelona so English isn't even his first language.

Been listening to the Harry Potter books all week, read by the amazing Stephen Fry.

On the last one. What a brilliant world she created.

The last few kinda predicted the future we’re in. Trump taking over and the public falling for it.
