It’s not really a “musical number” if it’s just a scene in which musicians perform a song on stage. It’s not like they’re breaking out into song and dancing across sets.

I disagree in this case, because the musical scenes will most likely be used to directly advance the plot or character development.

In Back to the Future, Marty McFly plays Johnny B Good. I think it's not a musical number, because he could play any popular song from that era, and it would have no bearing on the story. Conversely, the "Wise Up" scene in Magnolia is a musical number, because the lyrics, when sung by the characters, act as an extension of their development.

Based on what I've seen for A Star Is Born, I'm guessing the songs as performed will serve as an extension of the characters; the lyrics they sing and the emotions they bring to the stage are integral to the plot, and the movie wouldn't be the same if they performed different songs.
