Davis and Caesar were both collections of absolutely great scenes in unfocused narrative packages. The sums were inexplicably less than their parts, but many of the parts were so, so good.

I'd say this is spot on for Caesar. I'm more inclined to go with Plat's take on Davis:

Yep. Beautifully shot, well constructed somber tone and capture of a certain time and place, all lead by a class-A asshole of a character who I don't care to ever revisit again.

You saw True Grit though, right? Because that's an A+ movie.
Inside Llewyn Davis was very well made, I just didn't care for the story very much. I'd give it a C relative to the rest of their filmography. And Hail Caesar, while it had its funny moments, is bottom-of-the-barrel Coens.

Yeah True Grit was a good remake but thats the last thing I saw from them that I was kinda interested.

We watched True Grit and it was very well done, really liked it. I have ILD in my queue for when I can trick/convince everyone to watch it. I saw HC on the airplane coming back from Europe and liked it well enough.

My take on A Serious Man is that it's probably a magnificent film that I'll never fully appreciate, because it's so specifically geared towards the Jewish suburban 1960s type.

I like Burn After Reading more than most, I think. It's a fun sendup of the Tony Scott style of movies. Not their strongest work, but not as lifeless as the critics seemed to think it was. Lots of great rubbery, cartoon-like face work from everyone in the movie.

True Grit might be their single worst movie.

I’m really curious to revisit Davis and Caesar. I haven’t really been able to get the latter out of my mind since I saw it. I think there’s something there.

I absolutely fucking love A Serious Man and Burn After Reading. The ending of BAR is so important! It’s the key to the whole movie!

Yeah the ending is awesome, some of JK Simmons's best work

Yes. It’s classic Coen Bros existential absurdism. That has been their bread and butter their whole careers. And rarely has it been as bluntly, horrifyingly, hilariously, honestly tragic and ludicrous as that final moment, in which it is so beautifully made clear that none of us know what the fuck we’re doing.

Burn After Reading might be the last time I really enjoyed a movie from them.

First trailer for the Coen's Netflix movie just dropped. Looks mostly great, Tim Blake Nelson and Stephen Root in particular, but I could do without James Franco, and the episodic nature (it's six mini-stories) could much things up a bit.

I thought they scrapped the series. I thought this was just a movie now.

Ah. I don't see that as a hiccup for a Coen film, but I get what you're saying now.
