It's fascinating watching those trailers (Top Gun & Jay & Silent Bob) back to back. I can't help but feel like they're the same movie. One will have great visuals and probably more than one good performance. One will probably take itself more seriously. But when you boil it down, the spine of each is really just the exact same thing. Like, "guys, remember Tommy Chong? HE SAID 'UP IN SMOKE!'" and "guys, remember the volleyball scene from -- "OHMYGOD THEY'RE PLAYING FOOTBALL AND THERE'S THE SAME SHOT OF A DUDE AT A PIANO!" could both be in the same movie.
Hopefully they're both entertaining enough. Hopefully fans of each find something good to great in them. But my own personal level of interest or excitement is exactly the same for both.
That Top Gun trailer was awful. Makes it look like the whole movie will be recreations of scenes from the original.
I'm not really a Top Gun guy. I have no stake in this at all. However, I'm willing to let a trailer be a trailer. Marketing isn't a movie, obviously. But, yes. That's my take as well. But we'll see. Maybe it's great.

Original ideas be damned!
You forgot Mulan and Maleficent.
I liked the shots of them flying in the Top Gun trailer. Filming tech has gotten better so the dogfights should be really awesome. Or completely unwatchable edited messes, who knows what we're going to get. Either way those parts were what made me want to see the movie, not the obvious heartstring nostalgia bits. I'm glad they left Danger Zone out of the announce trailer, keep that for a more upbeat version later.
Also showing them taking off on the aircraft carrier was great until you remember that there are two-seat trainers and that's how they got it. That's part of what's taking me out of movies lately is that I can't keep myself immersed in the world for the entire film.
