among the great minds of RM I'm hoping a few will be good enough to suggest some decent books on Arthurian legend - analyses; well written versions of the various tales etc.; correlation to historical events; i don't have specific interest in one particular area at all - I'm more interested in getting a good background and/or overview of Arthurian legend and its place in societal mythologies - why are they important, what are the established archetypes, what roles do they fulfill for western culture- whatever, really - It's kind of an all over the place request but someone must have some knowledge of where to begin...

Is this for your own interest, or for a project? Just curious, and sorry I don't have any usable knowledge to give.

I loved these stories as a child. These and Celtic mythology in general. Between the ages of 12-18 I read everything I could find, as well as reams of Greek/Roman mythology. Sadly, I can't really remember too much of it and I'm sure most of what I read was fairly childish anyway.

ha- no project. it's an interest is all - I like myth, and the importance it plays in human development (yes, it's geeky, whatever) - but I know very little about it and since I spend a lot of time on a train commuting these days, I thought it would be interesting to dig into it a bit instead of playing Jungle Runner 4 hours a day on the train...

Not geeky at all. I am currently on an ancient civilization kick and can't get enough reading in on the history of it all. Or maybe it is geeky and we're both just geeks.

I was this way with greek mythology as a kid. then I began to dig into Jung's interpretations of mythology, and Joseph Campbell - and it seemed so... relevant? it's about what's under the surface of this type of story that's interesting I guess...

also, I didn't know samwise was into this stuff - does that mean it includes porn?

There was a short course on Coursera a while back on Fantasy, Sci Fi and the human psyche. Myths and Monsters and such like. I didn't have the headspace for it then, but I might pick it up next time round.
