Holy shit the first half of this was awful. We quit during the car chase.
Similar to Ruddo, I think anyone upset about this movie needs to have their head checked. But this was deeply unfunny, never once did i laugh. Maybe the back half is amazing?
The end is where the movie goes for the heartstrings, and it's also where "Barbie the movie with something to say" finally loses out to "Barbie the ad with something to sell," with the ghost of Barbie's creator showing up to do brand identity PR in a scene that is thematically and narratively incoherent, and where you can really see Gerwig reaching pretty egregiously. I think the back half is what finally swings the pendulum to "bad movie" for me because it is so disingenuous. Otherwise it's just a campy comedy that pays superficial lip service to gender issues in a way that sounds like old Jezebel headlines chiseled into a script

The smirk-nod is simply an affirmation that you understand that a joke has been made, and that you understand the contextual scaffolding from which the joke was structured, not that you find it funny

I can't be the only one here thinking that an edible hitting while you're shopping the k-mart barbie aisle with Joey and VG during a blue light special would be deeply funny.

Finally saw this. Lots to like but would have enjoyed more focus on Ferrara and her daughter's characters. The toy story conflict that disrupted the Barbie world just seemed to disappear.

Gosling getting a nom and Robbie not is great for a little “of course a MAN was nominated and Barbie wasn’t in her own movie” quip, but he totally stole the movie. Robbie was good, but I think you’re fooling yourself if you ignore that he stole every scene he was in.

yes to that America Ferrara take
the Barbie movie is deeper and funnier than many are giving it credit for, but not as deep or funny as it could've been, like most solidly good films out there; I laughed out loud when Ken was telling Barbie he didn't enjoy patriarchy like he thought he might, very relatable content for me; it was also extremely good and important to see an elderly trans woman being called "beautiful"
