Hunger Games still numba 1.

Napoleon and Wish are fighting for second. Napoleon over performing a bit. Wish underperforming by a bit more.

Sounds like a pretty weak thanksgiving box office.

Another music video wins (beyonce)

Hunger Games in 2nd.

Godzilla surprises at number 3.

Wish and Napoleon both fall hard (and deservedly so.)

Might be an overly harsh estimate, but probably not by much.

Mermaid grossed $570 million. You’re telling me it cost $685 million to produce, distribute, and promote? That’s insane.

It had a ridiculous 300million budget. Plus around 150 million for marketing, and the theater cut (which can vary a lot). So yeah, it would need a lot to break even.

The usual formula to calculate profitability is to multiply the disclosed production cost by 2.5

Yes what most people don't take in to account is that the studio doesn't get all the money the exhibiters take around half and international substantially more than half. The China numbers are mostly for looks they are lucky to see any of that money.

Honest question: Has the distribution marketplace shifted such that the timelines for recoup should be stretched out? Is today's Little Mermaid loss ultimately a net profit once you factor in streaming rentals and added subs? That would be a lot like the music industry where successful new artists typically take a couple album cycles to recoup.

Yes, they’re all just ads for merch anyway. The first Frozen came out eleven years ago and that crap is still everywhere. ASK ME HOW I KNOW.

I wonder if it's possible to track merchandise sales and licensing.

Estimates that, since first released, Frozen has made over 5 BIL in merch, and Cars 10 BIL.

So Disney will keep churning out movie ads hoping to strike that gold again.
