realism is just one of many modes of representation in art. it’s no better or worse than any other — it simply has a different set of conventions.

put another way, all of this shit is fake, most of it is entrenched in an industrial system that is wildly removed from most realities, and the end result is a projection on a giant screen in a dark room

completely agree. this is his sci fi movie, which is still indelibly a wes anderson movie. he’s gotten to be a better filmmaker as he’s continued, and each successive movie is a distillation of the ones before it (excluding the last one). that is difficult to pull off

No one said otherwise. With Wes Anderson it is clearly on purpose.

Wreck-It Ralph clearly doesn't go for the realism route, yet still it's a great movie. La vita è bella is all too real, but yet it wraps this horrible topic into a comedy with an almost magical twist to it. When I consider a Wes Anderson movie to be poor, it's for a mixture of reasons, not simply because it looks the way it does.

So you think WA goes for realism, but it’s too fake? I think I’ve lost the beat of this discussion and can’t bother myself to re read the thread. I suppose in mind I don’t consider most of his work of a realism pursuit

No, I don’t think WA goes for realism, I said the opposite in the post above yours. But what he intends or goes for is not important, only the end product.

The Coen brothers have a similar vibe in that their characters can be quite quirky, the design and the world the movie inhabits can feel a step away from reality, but the Coen brothers are far superior filmmakers. They have more range, more humor, more drama, better stories. Anderson feels flat and similar from movie to movie.

i dont care about realism. Specially in his movies. I just care for good movies, and its been a fucking while since Anderson did something that moved me.

He seems in autopilot for at least a decade now. Its kinda what happened with Burton, were im watching so many stuff that screams "EY ITS ME" that derails the experience of watching a movie for me.

Also, it wasnt easy for me while i worked on an ad agency were every art director jizzed with a simple frame of any of his movies. For christ sake, just buy the Art Of... book.

But im glad for those who seem happy for this.

"I'm over the whole Wes Anderson schtick" is a perfectly reasonable take.

I don’t get why you compared it to Wreck It Ralph then. At least not as an apple to apples comparison.

Yeah I don’t have a problem with that, just trying to make sense of Anders’ take.

I think maybe what Anders means is it doesn't feel real within itself. Wreck It Ralph's story and characters feel like they are consistent within the rules the movie created, while characters and events in WA movies might feel out of place even within their own worlds.

I haven’t seen the stop motion one, but The French Dispatch is easily my least favorite. The prior few did take some time to grow on me quite a bit, but I don’t expect TFD to. I’m very intrigued by this trailer though and my hopes are high.

I mean yeah I’d say many do, but that’s part of their character. I get if you just don’t like that aspect. If indeed that’s what he’s saying. I think.

I feel like Anders hasn’t clearly identified that his biggest issue with WA movies is that everyone has a flat emotional affect. Seems like that’s the bush he keeps beating around, but hasn’t explicitly said it.

Oh, I have no idea what Anders is trying to say, tbh. It's going over my head

I do agree there are comparisons to be made to Coens’ brothers or other filmmakers near that vein, but I also view them differently as far as intentions go. I know that was touched on earlier, and it doesn’t always have to affect my take, but I think these do because both are so unique. Just me though opinions anus holes whatever

Everything is flat, not just the characters
