Well, he did the more dramatically exciting thing, not the sensible thing, and that's fine. It's a TV show. I think the decision is wrong from a moral perspective, not from a storytelling perspective (though several aspects of it felt muddled)
Is anyone going to point out that Joel isn't her dad but a guy who's only known her for a few months and violates her trust to selfishly use her as a stand-in for his actual daughter

In my view Joel is not Ellie's adoptive parent either, though he manipulates her pretty monstruously into that position
I feel like she chose him for that position when he was set to have Tommy take her the rest of the way and she reacted by basically saying how everyone leaves her.
