Masterful.

A huge part of my enjoyment of that particular series was anticipation and letting the previous episodes ferment in my head for a week. I am planning a full Twin Peaks revisit soon.

:luv:

A good friend of mine decided to do a full series watch (he's never seen any of it before) about six months ago. He finished S1 and S2 in time to go see FWWM in theaters on Twin Peaks day. He hasn't started The Return yet. I just can't wait for him to see it.

Suggest he takes his time with it.

The Return aired on Sundays... I think I can make an episode a week work with my sched, July 3rd penciled in.

Oh yeah. I made sure he didn't binge any of it. I told him to give it at least three days between episodes. For The Return I'll make sure he takes a week per.

I think you can make an argument that this doesn't fit in with the current trend of reboots, since most of the other series/movies listed above were "dead" properties that were brought back to life, often on a wave of nostalgia, whereas Twin Peaks Season 2 promised a return in 25 years. It was planned all along.

But we both know that's not true.

Yeah I get depressed thinking about it.

what sort of Weinstein-adjacent blackmail does Kevin Smith have on Affleck that he keeps showing up in his movies

Eh, Affleck probably feels like he owes him.

The real question is how did Kevin Smith make a movie like Clerks to begin with? He doesn't seem capable.

Yeah Smith's early championing of the Good Will Hunting script is well documented. But at this point wouldn't it be easier to just write Smith a check for $1M every time he wants to reboot Clerks?

(And an interesting side note: there's enough proof over the years to suggest the original script -- at twice the length -- included the genesis of what became The Accountant. The earliest drafts saw Will Hunting going to work for the CIA as a genius assassin).

What do you mean? A cruddy-looking film about a couple of underachievers sitting around throwing pop culture references at each other, made up of mostly static mid-shots? How is he not capable of that?

The new Beavis and Butthead movie was funny, but not as good as Do America.

Clerks came at a time when you could sell a movie just by making it at least eighty minutes long and telling people it cost less than $40k to make. It didn't catually have to be competent or good. Robert Rodriguez similarly benefited from this phenomenon

I just meant personality or temperament mostly, but I'm going to rescind my previous comment anyway.

Clerks just felt so authentic to me, but nothing else he's ever done has.

I think I know what you mean. My take is that the authenticity you describe was actually an affectation. I think pre-fame Kevin Smith was motivated by an aspiration to indie DIY coolness. He wanted to be Richard Linklater or Hal Hartley. He lost that almost immediately and gave in to what I believe is his more authentic self: a goofy comic book man

This and "Nothing can kill the Grimace!" are probably Top 10 TV gags for me of all time.

Top Gun: Maverick just passed $700 million domestically. It’s about the cost of a Honda Civic away from passing Black Panther for 5th all-time (unadjusted for inflation, obviously). This film is somehow both David and Goliath.

I don’t know if the new Lord of the Rings series fits here, but the movies came out 20 years ago. Seems like not much of RM is watching. I loved the first two episodes.

We’re less than a week away from Cobra Kai season 5.
