Larys did kinda come out of nowhere, but he was there subtly: the hunt episode where he is limping around the women gossiping in the tent and then he’s the one that fractured Alicent’s trust of Rhaenyra in the Godswood. He’s another in a long line of overlooked people that use people thinking their physical detriments make them harmless a la Tyrion
There's a theory floating around that he's a greenseer who's skinchanging into all the rats we see to gather intel around the Red Keep.
Interesting. I figured those were more metaphorical.

I wasn’t aware that House Strong kept the Old Gods

The rats are just a metaphor for the rats gathering around the house of the dragon. The first shot they focus on rats on Rhaenyra sneaking through the dungeon and the rats are literally running through Balerion’s skull

Not sure, but they are descended from the First Men. I think the theory also relies on how close Harrenhal is to the Isle of Faces. I'm sure it won't be explored more in the show, but it's fun to think about in the background.
Another excellent episode. I didn't find the Larys bit out of left field at all. Bastards, cripples, and imps have a history of scheming in this world and the breadcrumbs were laid in earlier episodes.
Tracking the names of everyone is probably the most difficult part of the show right now. Did chuckle at the Grover Tulley reference.
