Here's how a WB rep described Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" to us when we asked for clarification: "While there are references to the first movie, it isn't really fair to call it a follow up or a sequel because there really is no through line besides a few repeat characters."
In an interview with The New York Times, director James Gunn said the choices for his film weren't defined by what he saw in 2016's "Suicide Squad."
"I wanted it to be its own thing completely," Gunn said. "When Warner Bros. said they wanted me to do this, I watched the first movie for the first time, and I called them back and said, what do I have to keep from this movie? And they said, nothing."

Hey I really, really liked this. I'm just gonna copy over what I posted elsewhere:
Much to my surprise I actually really liked The Suicide Squad! I super wasn't into the marketing but it won me over almost immediately. None of the trailers really conveyed its odd charms, the weird little detours it took, the artfulness and thoughtfulness of it, the twisted little alleyways and cul de sacs it traverses, the places it chooses to explore. far from the insipid homogeneity that has been plaguing the Capeshit® genre lately. it is messy, it is gaudy, it is extremely violent. it is intensely weird, it has some remarkably janky special effects and several moments of startling loveliness. it never stops showing you new things. and it even wades into some (surface level but welcome) critiques of US interventionism. I dunno, it was just exactly the type of movie I needed tonight, and I found it an utter delight. 8.5/10
