I can see it being a love it or hate it movie. I spent the first little while thinking that I was officially Too Old For This Shit, but by the end I think I loved it? I want to watch it again.

I liked it, it was fun and stupid.

I liked it, very well-shot, acted and constructed, but it didn't change my life like so many reviews led me to expect; my favourite thing about it was the chemistry between Georgina Campbell and Skarsgard, and

he's killed off pretty fast; I do understand why we have to spend time with the rapist character, it sheds light on the "monster's" motive -- revenge -- and I liked that, I just don't enjoy watching Justin Long much; it's worth another watch to see if it grows on me

attached to wrong post before:

I thought the metaphor for pervasive masculine violence was way more on-point than most "elevated horror" (to borrow a term from Jorge).

"The Apology"

I love Anna Gunn anyway so I expected to love this, but the "reveal" and dark turn this movie takes was possibly the most impactful scene of the year for me (I had to hide and cry behind a cushion); the film was almost entirely dependent on the strength of its two main characters' performances and I thought they knocked it out of the park; I also really liked the subtlety of the ending, it didn't go where most movies of its kind might do and was all the more emotionally satisfying for it

it's got 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and I'm surprised

They are good. The Endless contains one of the scariest concepts I’ve ever seen:

Spoiler: show
The 3 second loop

"Spring" is my favourite from them but yeah I loved The Endless; the only one I haven't been able to get into is Synchronic, starts well and then I get bored

I'm gonna just copy what I put on Facebook:

so this was really fun to do, and before I second-guess myself...

here are 20 of my favourite horror (and horror-adjacent thriller) movies of 2022, plus 5 honourable mentions I also loved that fought hard for a top spot; I wanted to see more movies that haven't hit UK streaming yet, and there are movies in other lists that I haven't seen because they don't interest me

1. Nope
2. You Are Not My Mother
3. The Batman
4. Banshees of Inisherin
5. You Won't Be Alone
6. The Wonder
7. Prey
8. Soft and Quiet
9. The Apology
10. Something in the Dirt
11. Speak No Evil
12. Resurrection
13. Blood Relatives
14. Saloum
15. We're All Going To The World's Fair
16. What Josiah Saw
17. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio
18. Barbarian
19. Men
20. Wendell & Wild

honourable mentions (also loved!):

Lamb -- an incredibly poignant Icelandic folktale about a grieving farming couple who give birth to a literal lamb, to me a poignant metaphor about how we throw ourselves into our mundane everyday in order to cope with grief, find meaning in it, and life after it; an appropriate mix of the absurd and the emotional

Incantation -- a Taiwanese found-footage film foregrounding authentic belief around motherhood and generational curses; even as I write this description I'm hearing ghosts asking me why it didn't make the top 20

Hellraiser 22 -- Jamie Clayton, a trans woman, makes the best and most authentic Pinhead here, and the movie is visually dazzling; however (and I hate to be that girl, but) parts of it were little over-long, dull and a bit muddled

The Northman -- sorry Robert, I love you but just... not quite this time bro; Robert Eggers, one of my very favourite film directors, skillfully rights many of the wrongs of previous Viking content, but just doesn't go quite hard enough for me

The Last Thing Mary Saw -- technically a 2021 movie with a wide release this year, folk horror, can't remember much detail but the atmosphere was memorable, and Rory Culkin's in it; can't go wrong, bish bash bosh

thats pretty similar...men was alright, but ultimately too obvious/weird for me. Black Phone was ok and somewhat a disappointing flick. Still the two are compelling enough.

Man, i still cant decide what scene was better

1-Mia Goth's dialogue in Pearl or her fucked up face at the end

2-Rebecca Miller's dialogue in Resurrection or her fucked up face at the end

3= that whole very fucked up death scene in Terrifer 2

I was expecting to hate Men, but gave it a shot because of Alex Garland - that arm through the mail slot scene was so disgusting - in a good way

I haven't watched Pearl since seeing it in the theater, but I'd say the monologue had more impact than the expression.

Didn't see Resurrection.

The fucked up death scene in Terrifier 2 was SO fucked up, the salt and bleach pushed it over the top - so that probably wins for me.

The worst thing off the top of my head from a horror film this year was the truly awful CGI when The Grabber killed his brother in The Black Phone. Even worse on second viewing.

I just watched Barbarian cause it was so high on your lists. It was OK. Kinda funny, I liked the monster(s) and the gags, but I'd like it to be longer and more hashed out. We barely even see much of the one creepy dude, who I assume is that old man's son. It has a fun style, but felt a little shallow to me.

X was a fun watch. It was entertaining, but it also felt shallow. I can see how this would be a fun horror movie to watch with a group of people, but it just doesn't have enough creativity or depth for me to call it a great movie.
