I recently watched that one, too, because I enjoyed X. I think it suffered from the same issue that I had with X: I agree that the build-up is tense and well done, but the ending just doesn't pay it off. It feels thin and left me disappointed

Irish found-footage horror that's fantastic for half its runtime then becomes absolutely awful

The found-footage genre within horror is basically the bold. I feel that's why the anthology format tends to work as I only have to suspend my disbelief 20-30 minutes at a time but even those suffer from the same, usually the frame narrative that is lacking. Watched V/H/S/94 last week and I feel it was the weakest of the series.

That said, I don't know if I've said it here but I find The Blair Witch Project essentially perfect in what it is within the horror realm... and I suppose that bar is kind of high.

The Blair Witch Project is my favourite horror movie and I actually love found-footage! I really did enjoy VHS94 but can't recall the others

I like a plot to be thin, so I can concentrate on character, aesthetic, mood, emotion; when it's good, found-footage ticks all of those boxes for me; the best ones are like tone poems

I wrote a list of good found-footage horror a couple of years back that I planned on adding to whenever I saw a new one, but I ended up forgetting about it (maybe because the films dried up); but one that I always recommend to people who want to check out less well-known F-F is "Alien Abduction" (2014)

I looooved the ending. The Inkeepers also had a great ending.

I hadn't heard of X but just read a review on BG about the soundtrack and it's definitely on the watch list.

I genuinely feel like I watched a masterpiece tonight; this was my FB review

HOLY SHIT, FRIENDS!

to my Irish-pagan but English eyes at least, Kate Dolan's "You Are Not My Mother" (2021/2) is another masterful, grounded, modern Irish changeling horror film to file alongside Lee Cronin's "The Hole in the Ground" (2019), with profound references to Irish paganism (co-existing with Irish Catholicism) and Fairy Faith as living, breathing spiritual traditions in Ireland

I'm so giddy about the many references to Irish magic, mythology and folklore woven throughout its otherwise realistic, streamlined, domestic tale of family history (a blend that couldn't be more Irish) that I want to list them all!

but I won't, you should just see it for yourself... and then come back and talk to me about whether and when your heart leaped like mine did to see all these elements so respectfully portrayed and represented (seriously, if there are other films that do it as well as this one does, I haven't seen them)

just when I was starting to think they weren't making horrors like they used to, they're making them better; and if there was any justice in the world, this gem would do for Irish folk horror what The VVitch did for American (and not without a stylish little nod to the British Wicker Man, too, in a finale that brings just enough wit and "aha! yes OF COURSE that's how it ends up" without being hammy)

please watch this! I'll sleep well tonight knowing that I did, and that now I've got another all-time favourite (I mean it, I'll be busy wondering where it slots into my Top 10 for a good while)

I really loved X. It had me hooked from that opening shot "aspect ratio" switch.

Ti West is very good at this.

I was sure I wouldn't watch X (porn related content isn't my thing, nothing against it) but I've seen one or two people I was surprised by say they liked it, so I will eventually

Apparently there's a prequel movie to X already shot and it's going to be released later this year.

Also, holy shit! I didn't realize that was Mia Goth also playing the old woman. She was great in both roles.

The prequel was apparently filmed on the back of Avatar 2 with a lot of the same crew. Strikes me as kind of funny
