I generally put things on the year they're finished. I started the first book of My Struggle in December of 2020 but didn't finish it until mid-January of 2021 of things so it's a 2021 book. If it's really close I'll revert to the year before--I *technically* finished a Ferrante novel in the early hours of 2022 but I'd read like 90% of it the previous two days so I'm counting that as last year. But in general I find the finish date to be the easier thing to track, otherwise you're updating a list from a previous year and god knows when you'll finish some things.
