Come one, come all, and gaze upon the frailty of the human body, the unfairness of tragedy, and the meaninglessness of life--it's the 2021 RM Celebrity Death Pool! In the most basic terms, we're going to compete to see who can predict the most deaths in the coming calendar year among our betters. Selections will be made in a snake-style draft, and once we've completed the draft, we will (more or less) just wait things out and see whom the bell tolls for.
Here are some more detailed rules and regulations:
1. Each team will initially be made up of six (6) people that you think will die in 2021. I'll use a random number generator to determine who picks first (snake style, so 1-10, 10-1, 1-10, etc.). We'll allow up to 6 hours for everyone to make their picks with a mutual understanding to cut people some slack during nighttime in their timezone.
2. For our intents and purposes, a "celebrity" is someone whose death is covered by national news outlets (straight-up news organizations, entertainment news, ESPN, etc.). Most of the participants are in the U.S., but that doesn't mean you're limited in the scope of who is and isn't a celebrity to your home country or region--if you can prove to us that someone you picked has died and it's covered in a national news outlet, that's good for us. Please don't pick RMers as a joke--c'mon.
3. Since death comes for us all but comes sooner for people who tend to be older, we are going to work with a tiered scoring system. If you correctly pick someone who dies at an age over the age of 70, you'll earn three (3) points. If they're between the ages of 50 and 70 when they die, you'll earn six (6) points. And if they're younger than fifty, you'll score ten (10) points. Remember, that's at the age of their death, not at their age at the start of 2021.
4. If all goes well (you could say), people will start to pass away pretty soon. In order to keep things interesting, teams will be allowed to re-load every two months (March 1, May 1, July 1, September 1, and November 1). If anyone on your team has died in the intervening two months, you'll get to add someone else to your squad (but you can only make one add--so if you've scored twice, you only get to add one person). At the same time, if your squad has remained whole over the previous two months, you'll be allowed one drop/add--that is, you can drop one person from your team and add someone that you believe might have a better chance of crossing the river Styx. These additions/replacements will be waiver-wire style, so the team with the fewest total points gets to decide first, then the team with the second fewest total points, etc.
5. If
no one on
anyone's list dies within a two-month stretch between add/drop dates, we'll have an expansion draft where everyone is allowed to pick an extra person to their team to make things more interesting.
I think these rules are a good start--as key dates get closer, I'll try to clarify any of those add/drop rules that might seem opaque now. Let's have fun. Let's get to dying.
