Can someone please explain the benefit of streaming providers just removing their own content from their service? I keep reading about Disney in particular removing shows from the service. Why? They aren't paying anyone to keep it on there. I saw they are removing Willow, and now one of the best things they've done in recent years, The Mysterious Benedict Society.

They counted beans. They found out how many people use Disney+ to watch old episodes of Willow (a very small number of people). How many of those people would cancel if we pulled those shows? How much does it cost to keep them up (not just servers but also residuals to writers and actors and whatnot)? How many of those people will buy a DVD or VOD if their preferred show isn't on streaming? Put the numbers into a formula and whichever gets the most pennies wins.
Alternatively, protecting the brand. Someone signs up for Disney+ to watch Star Wars content and enjoys it. But they get through that and try something else. If the first thing they look at is something they don't like, like Willow, will they cancel? Quality over quantity sort of thing. The argument against this is that you can leave something available but have the algorithm bury it. So one would have to search for Willow but never be recommended Willow.

Are all of Disney's animated movies on there? They used to keep a lot of those in the vault and only release them at certain times to keep interest high.

I raised this in the other thread where we were discussing this, that I can totally envision a future where classics are rotated in and out of the vault, or tiered pricing where you get different “channels” (Marvel, Star Wars, classics, etc.). It’s just going to become cable again.

Also, if ever there were a thread that could be merged, this was it…
Which thread should it be merged with? I considered Cord Cutters but not everuone who uses streaming apps is a cord cutter, hence the question at the top of the thread
