With the success of Trolls World Tour, coronavirus concerns, and the upcoming fight between theaters and production companies as laid out in the below article, will theaters ever get back to being a thing?

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/28/media/tr ... index.html

The interesting quote in that article from Universal CEO Jeff Shell: "As soon as theaters reopen we expect to release movies on both formats".

I don't see many in the theater any more, always enjoy watching them at home where I can control things if I have to go to the bathroom, get food, or missed a line in the movie.

What are your thoughts?

I don't know what will happen, but I'd be thrilled for straight to Blu-Ray releases from now on. I don't like crowds. Someone or something hurts my viewing experience nearly everytime I go to a movie theater. Coughing, talking, torn screen, bad sound, bad seat or seat location, etc. I love watching movies at home!

20 years max? movie theaters have been overpriced for way too long, and with technology and entertainment making it easier to be entertained from home, these things will be like 'drive in' movie theaters soon. the covid19 thing is just making this conclusion clearer and quicker. movie theaters are going to have to start offering a much different experience than what they are traditionally known for. people have surround sound and incredible tvs/screens, everything the movie theater used to be can be replicated at home now. i wonder if first dates are gonna start happening at home? the potential.

maybe with social distancing drive in's will make a comeback.

There are only a handful of movies that really need to be seen on a big screen to really be appreciated. The last MI movie was probably the last one I can think of.

Tangentially, I do miss seeing a blockbuster comedy in a crowded theater. Was Bridesmaids the last time that really happened? Maybe Girls Trip, but I didn’t love that, nor did I watch it in the theater.

There are few activities I used to enjoy more than going to the movies but since I've had kids I'm lucky to get there 2-3 times a year so if they die...they die.

I adore going to the cinema. Its a wholly experience to me. Im sure they will eventually go back, there is also a lot of money in those markets for the movies, not only in the US.

I fully expect institutions like Alamo will survive because they offer an experience to go along with the movie itself. That kind of thing will become more prevalent. I also expect VR to fill some of the gap left by traditional movie theaters.

I was looking forward to my kids being old enough for me to go see movies in the theater again, because I watch movies 3 ways at home.

1. With my kids which is the absolute, fucking worst! They never stop talking LOUDLY, and then get bored and run around the room, yelling at the screen and dancing in front of it.

2. After the kids are in bed. In which case, I see the first 35 minutes before I am sound asleep.

3. During work hours, which means it's playing off to the side, and I'm giving it about 15% of my attention, so it can't REALLY be said that I watched the movie. It also can't REALLY be said that I accomplished any work.

Also, y'know, I can hold my pee for the duration of a movie, Ruddo. :shake:

Yeah I can too, but I see plenty of people that get up during a movie to go to the bathroom, do I included that in my home scenario. I didn't want to bladder shame anyone

Movie theaters fucking suck, hope they all go out of business and kill off the shitty malls and strip malls they're in while they're at it. :finger:
