so because i'm a deadbeat, i skipped out of work today on my first day of the new year and saw 1917. it was beautifully shot in a series of continuous one-takes that are seamlessly spliced together. it's definitely not a true story, but more historical fiction. but it's based on a war that hasn't gotten nearly enough attention cinematically as other wars. and it's stressful and brutally detailed.
i loved it, and think it's one of my favorite "war" movies. i may see it again when it gets it's full release (heh) next week.

i initially thought the filming would be distracting, with the camera 2 steps ahead of the actors every way. but i quickly realized how good it made the storytelling.
and yeah, i had high hopes for dunkirk. that one just fell flat for me.

They brought this one back to theatres for a couple weeks here so i got to see it tonight. What a film. As said above, those one takes really put you in the scene. And with them using period correct uniforms , its still incredible to see what soldiers went in to battle with and the conditions they were under really come through here. Glad I got to see it.
