As far as the rat business, I see suggestions to dig down a bit and enclose the run with hardware cloth all around and a couple inches down. We have mice in our area, but I haven't heard tale of rats. If we go with a larger breed of chicken, they might just take care of mice themselves, or so I hope.

For newbies, would you suggest chicks, pullets, or chickens?

We have a deaf, blind dog. How much should we worry about segregating him from the chickens?

Any input for prospective chicken owners?

I grew up with chickens ... can’t think of a dirtier animal and they attract rats.

I grew up in what used to be a big egg producing area in the 50s. The CC&Rs all heavily restricted chickens when it became a suburban neighborhood for a reason, eh?

How do you prevent the chickens from getting fly bitten?

Man, if you’re this hard up for eggs I will just ship you a dozen.

why is this in A&E?

96583UP, any recommendations for climbing vines that would survive Canadian winters?

i had a bad experience with a yard was completely dominated by ivy

ever since then i can barely look a vine in the face

funny you mention though bc i was juuuuuuuust thinking about maybe trying to maybe consider some vines again.... if they were slow-growing..... and flowering..... but i don't think i am ready

i dont want to get hurt again

but english ivy will likely survive/ problem is, once it gets going, it just doesn't ever stop

depending on where / how / what your are trying to grow (vertical, etc)... periwinkle or creeping phlox could be an option

creeping phlox is pretty cool actually

Thanks, I'd like something to slowly grow up my stucco but not do any damage.

We planted a peach tree this spring. Probably won't produce for a couple of years, but it completes our area of Blueberry bushes, lime tree, lemon tree, and now peach tree.

planted a bunch of crocuses today

i weed the dandelions

it leaves a hole

i fill the hole with a crocus bulb

cover it in a soil mix with grass seed

seeds the grass

removes the dandelion

crocus grows early spring before grass cutting happens

win-win-win

now let's see how many the bastard squirrels dig up

My parents ordered from this farm to get the worms going and they seemed to really like the customer experience.
