Did some prep this weekend: Pulled my straw off the beds, got some compost and tilled it in. Transplanted a row of strawberry bolt crowns from one spot to another. Planting carrots, romaine, butter lettuce, and spinach on Thursday. Tomatoes in another week or two. Going with a much simpler spread this year.

Man it felt so good just to be out there getting dirty.

While working in the yard the last 2 evenings, we’ve found a LOT of poison oak. It’s really running rampant. And I’m REALLY allergic.

Back in 2020 we potted a pad of prickly pear cactus that we picked on a road trip to Amarillo during the lockdowns. The plant has always been healthy but hasn't started budding more pads until earlier this year. Now it's starting to bud enough that we'll need to transfer it to a bed along the sidewalk. We're also in a drought pattern here in Texas, so I'm guessing the sudden escalation of cactus growth is a mildly apocalyptic sign of sorts.

Picked up a native plant order on Tuesday, but unable to plant them til this weekend and had to go back to the city. It’s been straight 90s here the last three days, but submerged them in a couple inches of water and, returning tonight, seems to have worked. :hooray:

Need some help, guys. We bought some sprouts of various veggies (ironically to save time) about a month ago and just haven't had time to get them into soil yet. A few of them perished, but some watermelon, Thai basil, eggplant and Fresno peppers are still green.

I'm going to plant them tonight, but it's been so hot that I'm afraid the soil is going to shock them. I've got some new soil and compost so I figured I'd just til the garden bed and mix in the new stuff, but how deep should I be going?

If they are just sprouts then not too deep. Just surround the roots.

A dash of Bio-tone is vital for transplants here. Not sure about humid TX.

I always squirt some Dr. Earth pure gold all-purpose.

This will be a fun project. If it doesn't take, the growing season is so long here I'll just buy some more plants and actually get them in the ground.

Our front bed is getting a makeover. Looks like we are gonna do three Golf Ball Pittosporum and in between those a couple purple Salvia. One other spot is getting either a Hydrangea, Azalea, or Japanese Stewartia haven’t decided yet.

Our hydrangeas have come in most beautiful this spring. Multicolored pinks and purples. Quite lovely

Just added some lavender and salvia, plus a good solid layer of mulch.

Our pear tree is bigger than I thought it would get, and our two Japanese maple are staying tiny.

So what do you do with lavender? Our neighbor kid came by a few weeks ago and sold us a batch that he grew and we felt kinda obligated to buy it but we have no idea what hat to do with it. I know it can be added to tea and stuff but I wouldn’t know how much.

Dang wease you got worked over.

Lavender is for planting in the front yard and then you look at it.

1. Mint-lavender tea is nice, but you’ll want to go light on the lavender

2. It can be used as a deterrent for closet moths. Tie some together with twine and stick it in your closet

Hmmm. You may be onto something. He did present it as “lovely lavender” in his sales pitch.

When you say light on it, do you mean like a leaf or two? How is it measured like this?

huge storm came last night but with 50 degree temps this morning was a welcome opportunity for some gardening prep:

- Tilled the vegetable garden soil
- Mixed in new organic garden soil
- Planted fertilizer spikes for the arbs, roses, camellias, and hydrangeas

feels good to get outside again in the yard

can’t wait til the leaves are back on the trees
