Honestly, I don’t have an answer to this, so I’ll just say:
He’s not bad by any measure and he’s usually really fun to watch, but The Rock seems incapable of portraying a character.
The entirety of Chris Pratt’s range is on display in Guardians, he is boring in any scene that requires a modicum of seriousness or weight, and I do not consider him to be more capable than Ryan Reynolds.
I think, the way that modern blockbusters are constructed, acting talent is irrelevant beyond a narrow window. The breakneck pacing, expository drive, and anchorless (or just presumed and never shown) character traits are like a gravity well, pulling every performance towards the center. This constant by-the-gram dolling out of human interaction in big projects tends to make the performances in smaller movies stand out that much more, until I feel like I overrespond to them. Like, I think Olivia Coleman is incredibly, incredibly talented, but in-between her projects I’m mostly just watching flashing lights, pretty colors, and at least one spaceship that’s not gonna fit but then it does woops there’s a scratch tho so cue the punchline. Actual acting feels like an innovation, after too much of that.

I have a 13 year old who only wants to see Jurassic Force Awakens: Ragnarok and a 6 year old who only wants to see cartoons. So that’s about 70% of my movie watching. What I’m saying is, when I’m watching *my* selected movies it always feels a bit like seeing your first painting after 3 months of being temporarily colorblind and reading only excel files. I feel like I can’t tell what’s great vs good under those conditions, because it all feels so vibrant and wild to me.
