I quite enjoyed Series 2. The finale was a bit OTT but in general the whole thing was interesting.

First 2 episodes of Season 3 have been top-notch. Idris is amazing and the cinematography is killer.

Spoiler: show
The first season is great, and then it starts to trail off in the second. We're into the third and it's OK, but too self-consciously and relentlessly dark without the snarky humour to undercut it.

Series 3 will be the last. But there is a movie in the works. There are also whispers of a show featuring Alice.

I mean it's really meh to me. It seems like it takes itself so seriously, but the 3 cases the first 3 episodes feel so far over the top.

Not to mention, the entire police force feels insanely incompetent.

It's kind of meant to be OTT and overwrought. A nice change from most British crime shows which are bland bland bland and nothing happens except people talking to each other drinking wine. There are quite a lot of nice X-Files nods on Luther. I got a bit bored after enjoying Season One though.

The Wire didn't need "over the top." True Detective doesn't need "over the top."

I see Skitch's point, but I kinda looked at this show as a showcase for Idris and I think he's thrilling to watch. I also think the cases get better in the later seasons.
