Pretty sure Shatner felt he was the one main character. :-)

Shatner doesn't have a God complex, God has a Shatner complex.

Nice.

Sharner's style was actually pretty generic "pre-method" 60's tv, and the action scenes couldn't have been more ordinary for the era (btw I still believe that all fighting should be limited to hip tosses and hammer punches), but his show did well and he was memorable in it, so...

By the time the first movie hit he'd started to get in on the joke. Then he basically played more and more to what people felt "Shatnering" was as he aged.

Summary: William Shatner is sci fi's Eddie Vedder.

Rumor is that the buzz is so bad that they are planning on changing it or replacing it with an anthology series after the first season.

Pretty sure Fuller wanted it to be an anthology series from the jump hitting different parts of the timeline but they told him no. Vindication I guess.

It's a shame they didn't learn the value of taking chances with new ideas by the creatives after the Voyager/Battlestar debacle.

They said no to a Star Trek pitch from JMS. He then went on to make Babylon 5, and they copied the basic idea of it for DS9. Then went on to copy many of the stories and episodes.

Text from my brother, who has recently been watching BBC America reruns:

Captain Picard just dug up Dr Crusher's freshly dead grandmother against her wishes, solely because he didn't like the guy the doctor was banging.

He made his chief engineer and a sex robot dig the corpse up, because leave no chance to big dog untouched.

And this is a show you like.

Response:

yes

Insurrection still makes me rage. Picard is basically a war criminal.

Someone sprawled out on a company couch, yawned, and said, "you guys wanna make a movie?" And everyone shrugged.

Related note: Master and Commander is my favorite Star Trek movie.

Our lovely ship is out alone in the reaches. There's a talented enemy commander with a better, more powerful ship. We lose the opening fight and hide in a cosmic gas cloud. The big, warm-but-stern commander has a science geek doctor friend. They explore new lands along the way, and debate the weight of duty versus scientific discovery. They play classical music for fun. The crew is treated as something more than background fodder, and their losses matter. There are terrible one liners galore (the lesser of two weevils).
