I fall more in line with this. The first 2-3 seasons have their moments, but they don't the hit the same way those other shows do.

Michael becomes lovable. But it's a long road. Giving him some identifiable humanity and making him good at his job are big parts of what makes the show work, I think. And again that's largely because it's earned over time.

The creators have talked about the conscious decision to make those changes for an American audience. I think they were right. But it is very American. So it makes a degree of sense that it's harder for you to relate.

first three seasons are untouchable. Forth season is a weird mix. I couldnt finish the last one.

No thank you. Y'all can keep all of it. I can't think of a popular comedy that I dislike as much as Arrested Development.

These posts go hand-in-hand, I think, because those other four shows are very much comfort shows: Easily likable characters, pretty low stakes, and broad comedy that frequently references pop culture and other ephemera in an effort to bring in as many viewers as possible.

Arrested Development is the opposite of that: It's patently absurdist, insular comedy that requires longterm viewing for certain jokes to land. It's not about pop culture references, and while still a comedy, the stakes also include hands being bitten off, prison, incest, mental impairment...I absolutely love the first run of AD, but it's a completely different animal than what we're talking about here.

You are literally the only one talking about styles of comedy; Joe asserted "The Office is the GOAT half-hour sitcom," and i countered "Arrested Development is a better half-hour sitcom." The above is completely irrelevant.

I don't think it's accidental that those four comedies were lumped together by multiple posters in thus conversation, and that you dragged in AD seemingly out of nowhere. You are wrong!

Arrested Development pushed the boundaries of the half-hour form much further than The Office, doing a ton of things that are now common-practice in shows like P&R.

It's not "out of nowhere" if the conversation was about half-hour sitcoms, which it was. Now if Joe had said "The Office is the GOAT half-hour sitcom with likable characters, pretty low stakes, and broad comedy that frequently references pop culture and other ephemera in an effort to bring in as many viewers as possible" you'd have a point, but he didn't so this is just you trying to take control of the conversation. You should stop that, it's annoying

Guys, can we all acknowledge how these shows directly influenced the greatest show available on Netflix, Fuller House?

Re: So I finally got Netflix...

Fri June 26, 2020 6:12 pm

I'm not trying to take control at all. But I'm not going to roll over when I think that I'm right and you're wrong.

But you can have the rest of the conversation, I've got too much shit to do to keep up with this.

Good Lord. I just wanted to talk about a stupid lava show and you guys buried that real fast. Here is the only right opinion. The Office (U.S.), parks and rec, and to a lesser degree 30 rock are way overrated. First three seasons of AD are pure genius but they take jumped the shark coming back. Like, bad. Now STFU and talk about braindead game shows that make you dumber by watching
