I didn't love it, I didn't hate it; I didn't feel sympathetic for any of the characters, I didn't feel anger or disappointment over any of their decisions, I didn't feel relieved at their triumphs or sad at their failings; it was almost an entirely cerebral experience.

I'm sort of on board with this, though i connected with DDL for a few specific reasons:

1. I look vaguely like him, and my grandad looked a LOT like him, so i've always felt this sort of senseless kinship with him.

2. I'm very meticulous and detail oriented.

3. It is also difficult for me to recover if my breakfast routine isn't just-so.

But without those three things that were 100% subjective to my life, yeah, this is the second PTA film (after Inherent Vice) that was long on composition, but short on characters who delivered any sort of emotional impact.

Thinking more about this today.

I think the intro scene, of Reynolds getting himself washed and dressed, was an obvious nod to The Perfect Human.

And this was my favorite shot in the film:

I also thought it was clever how, on their first date, we get a lot of closeups of Reynolds putting the dress on Alma, whereas most date scenes in most movies would show the dress coming off. Fairly obvious metaphor for the way his fashion would always stand in between their relationship, but it's little things like this that made a very quiet film so compelling.

Good thoughts.

I was very surprised on the framing of this movie. Specially all the intro. Its shot in 35 right? Almost 4:3.
