He's announced this is his last one.

This has like a novel-of-manners sort of feel, sort of like late-19th century, thinking Henry James or Edith Wharton.

I agree, it looks far more literary than any of his other works (including the one based on a book).

The way the trailer climaxes with a sense of foreboding, and she says "Whatever you do, do it carefully," it makes me think that he's going to kill her.

I think it's already clear that it's going to fit into his career-long focus on con-men, which I'm totally on board with.

And I actually think that his work is extremely literary, and that Inherent Vice may be the least so of his movies.

Sure, but if the fashion isn't the con, then I guess that just leaves his marriage?

The scenes of her modeling his clothing for potential buyers (at least I think that's what's happening) seems like an interesting insight to the film and their relationship dynamic. I'm excited for this, but will temper my enthusiasm after how much I didn't like Inherent Vice.

I love him, but for some reason after seeing that preview, it makes me think he was probably so insufferable while filming this movie...

If he did his usual method thing then yes, probably.

PTA is a GOD
DDL is a GOD
This looks like his take on a Merchant Ivory movie or something.

Like it's cut very pleasingly and gives me just enough story

Yeah, it reminded me of The Master trailer in this regard.

Also Johnny Greenwood's piano piece is magnificent. Those key changes take something that would be syrupy and almost trite and turns it into something off-putting and suspicious.

When do these December limited releases usually open up a bit wider? Mid-January? Only showings are at 7:00PM at a theater in Boston, and I want to get something closer to home.

Yeah, usually mid-January.
