Nearly finished with this book. The writing is very pedestrian, but the story is excellent. Really looking forward to this movie.

Super minor spoiler:

Spoiler: show
I hope they get the deluxe haptic suite/Shaptic chair that Parcival buys after he becomes famous just right. It looks so cool in my head, I am curious to see how Speilberg realizes it on the screen.

My review as well.

I was thinking of you when I read about Parcival's new haptic rig, thinking "oh man, I wonder if MD has read this? It sounds amazing and so close to a reality." 8-)

You getting Far Cry next week?

Heck yeah! Though my enthusiasm has wained a bit. I'm definitely excited for the co-op mode and map editor; but then I have a lot less time for gaming these days, plus all the gameplay vids I've seen are making the entire campaign look fairly one-note.

I just pre-ordered my copy. I'm in between games at the moment and this setting has me interested. I've read/seen very little of the game so far.

Maybe some co-op in the future??

a thousand times yes

Lenny, you're always welcome.

Just got back from seeing this. Had no idea it had been a book. And i'm not a gamer.

Ridiculously entertaining. Lots of laughs, tons of pop culture references, great action, incredible visuals. I'd go see it again.

Hmm. I'm not sure about this one.

The car chase near the beginning was jaw-droppingly visceral (literally, my jaw dropped) and probably one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in a movie. The fluidity, the composition, the geography, the juggling of elements - staggering stuff; it seems like Spielberg's brain must have been firing at an absurd pace to even conceive of the construction of that sequence.

After that...I just don't know. It has its moments. I like Sheridan and Cooke a lot. They're good together. Kaminski's cinematography is great. The Shining sequence was cool and unexepected and is probably going to give lots of kids nightmares. But, by the end...I just don't know. The conclusion seems reductive and preachy. I need to let it simmer for a while.

I feel similarly. There was a lot to like here but it is also very explainy. The film would've benefited from a more impressionistic approach (as much as they could get away with without losing the YA audience they're clearly aiming for). I wish they did more with the melding of reality and the Oasis, in terms of the characters' perspectives. There's a lot of cool things that could've been explored there. I really did not like the conclusion

I loved it.
It has his things for sure, but it took me on a 2 hour ride where i wasnt thinking about anything more than the movie.
The car chase is incredible, the shinning scene is great, the last key too.
i didnt likde the ending that much though, but what a fantastic ride!!

Spoiler: show
i thought he was going to turn off the oasis...it felt kinda meh that they would close only two days but well...and yeah the scenes with simon pegg in the van were pretty bad.

So you're saying they didn't fix the ending of the book. OK, sure.

We were on the fence with this one for my youngest to begin with so I'm leaning towards passing.

So I've still got like 85 pages left in this book, but I really want to see the movie this weekend. Since the best part of the book is the story (not the writing), does RM think I'll be just fine if I go see the movie before/without finishing the book?

Yes. Spielberg is a better director than Kline is a writer.
