The best solution would have been a limited series with a Game of Thrones-level budget.
The movie works as is but there was so much left out (politics, the dinner, more clarity on Yueh's motivation, getting to know the citizenry, etc.). The dinner would've covered multiple bases but it likely would've felt off, tonally, with the rest of the movie as currently structured.
GIVE ME THE SNYDER-NEUVE CUT, DENIS!

Should've made him Fenring.
As someone who never read the book....the movie did not need this stuff. It was still quite crystal clear and enjoyable

Oh, I agree with the exception of the deleted Yueh scene; I enjoyed it as-is. But I do think non-book-readers would've enjoyed the entirety of the narrative pieces in series form.

If I hadn’t watched the David lynch version and felt lost enough to look up some of the lore, I wouldn’t have appreciated the exposition. However, they weren’t super clear about the messiah prophecy beyond the doctor talking to herself about Paul.

I say he was good. I've watched the movie three times now and it's been incrementally better each time. It sorely needs 30-40 more minutes (which apparently exists based on what I've seen of the deleted scenes and the fact Villeneuve had a 5-hour cut at one point).
I thought Chalamet was great

Me too buddy.
He played the reluctant skeptical hero very well. Then it all popped during the fight scene. Oh baby

Saw it tonight on the big screen. Loved it. Agree it could use another 20 mins or so to flesh some stuff out. Can’t wait for a directors cut and the sequel.

So I never read the book, but have a soft spot for the original movie, which I haven't seen in years and never fully understood; but as a young kid was perhaps the most formatively visceral movie experience I'd known. There was something so off-beat and solemn about it that I was hoping wouldn't be lost in the new one, and I'm glad that it was still fully intact.
Having digested the new one after last night's viewing, I'm now responding to a bunch of posts from the last several pages:
One facet I don’t think they articulated well enough was the prophecy and the coming jihad. That fight represents the first step of his transition from young Atreides to (possibly) becoming the fabled Kwisatz Haderach.
Again, without having read the book, I thought this was articulated really well. My complaint would just be that
Paul's pivot from solemn teen to brave fighter basically happens the moment he hops in the little two-man ship and flies through the storm. I wish they had developed this character change a bit more gracefully.
More time was needed setting up Arrakeen itself. The people who live there, the prevalence of Catholicism (we got a few quick glimpses of the Orange Catholic Bible) and how it figures into the messianic prophecy, etc. As it stands in the movie, it felt like they were there for only a few days before the Harkonnens return.
I'd gladly welcome more of this, but didn't feel like it was missing necessarily.
There was so much they could have explored and set up. The mentats (who are basically ignored), the reason they fight with swords, The difficulty of space travel, spice, the immense history and religious background... Plenty to fill a movie. Instead it's all vomited out clunky exposition.
I didn't ever feel like the exposition was clunky, not even a little bit. I 100% agree that some explanation of the sword fighting would be helpful, because that was the first thing my buddy said when we exited the theater: "They use giant guns and bombs unless they're on the ground, then they have to use swords?!" As for the mentats, I'm fine leaving them to be mysterious figures who fulfill a particular role in the world, but would again gladly take more on their background.
I think Burt, Ensign, and Ruddo are right that some sort of expansive desert shot illustrating what lies ahead would serve the movie perfectly. But I did really enjoy the last fight, and will just reiterate that I wish they'd taken just a little more time to set up Paul's pivot from reluctant hero to brave warrior.
Final thoughts:

Agreed on both of these points.
I never felt confused about anything; I felt the necessary exposition was delivered really well and never took me out of the movie. And what worked well -- the music (how has nobody mentioned this yet?!), the pacing, the color pallet, the overall vibes -- worked EXTREMELY well for me. If the sequels are up to par, this could very easily trump Star Wars, LOTR, and GOT for my preferred sci-fi/fantasy epic. I've always liked my sci-fi more moody than swashbuckly: 2001, Gattaca, Alien, Dark City. The moodiness of this was just so perfect. I went to bed and had frames just drifting through my head, not really clear on what scene they were attached to, but just overwhelmed by the scope of the world.
The Liet-Kynes character was way too thinly developed; she felt like a plot device, and her death didn't pack any punch.
I could've used just a little more explanation about what the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood is all about. What are the implications of Jessica's pregnancy, and what are their overall goals?
And perhaps the biggest question I have is why is the Emperor so interested in creating chaos? Why did he set up House Atreides to fail?
