We watched the first episode of Mare of Easttown. Some clunky exposition dialogue aside, it doesn’t seem like a bad show, but...The wife and I agree we’ve about had our fill of this sort of poverty/misery porn. Not gonna keep watching it.

i started this one yesterday, and i like it. I need to see where it goes with the crime stuff. But i also agree...HBO seems to need at least one show per year with a very famous star that shows us how awful and sad is to be a normal person. Its like they say ¨ey look im awful like you!!¨

Its kinda weird.
Yeah, True Detective, Sharp Objects, Mare, plus other shows on other streaming networks...it’s a genre now, call it “poor white trash who all do opiates and kill each other and sometimes molest each other too.”

Yeah wonder why there's a bunch of shows about poverty and drug use translated into the language of moral depravity and set in rural spaces in 2021.

Don’t forget the part about their being available on premium streaming services, all starring millionaires

Hey I don’t care who they play, but the viewer relationship with this sort of show is extremely boring and becoming slightly uncomfortable
i don't think you even need to go that far (to the viewer/beholder's relationship to the work). i think you can safely say that these shows are extremely boring, regardless of their sincerity

more propaganda -- about how utterly fucked u.s. pharmaceutical companies are, how hollowed out economic prospects are in rural areas and cities, how drug dependency, overdose and suicide has and continues to rise -- is good and necessary (but insufficient to the problems we face).
but the representation of these subjects to make a moral argument doesn't necessarily result in great artworks. most of these shows are after-school specials that don't understand themselves as such.

Yeah I agree with every word of that, and I’ll add that the shows don’t do anything to explore the systemic challenges – not just pharmaceutical companies, but also things like zoning or economic development — and when it’s the umpteenth show to portray these people with such a shallow lens, and then throw in very corny TV dramatic tropes (like the telegraphing in this show that the dead mother‘s baby is obviously the son of her own father), the whole thing just starts to feel dumb and gratuitous

Show me on the doll where zoning touched Rust Cohle.
