Long Nights is one my favorite Ed studio performances.

It's a pleasant enough listen and begs the question why Vedder doesn't bring more of this type of material into PJ instead of the trite JB, FD and The End.

But take the 2 covers out and it's a bit thin.

It's an artifact of its time, but as a member of that songs target audience, it felt refreshing. Not profound or inspiring, but still enjoyable to hear. Live especially, since it felt shared, which is really important for a song like this. The studio version I've listened to maybe once.

The original is better

Maybe this is part of it. Unless I've misinterpreted your political leanings over the years, it doesn't seem like you -- someone who probably agrees with most of what the song says anyway -- really should be part of this song's target audience, even though it's obvious that you are. I get that the resistance needs fight songs and all that, but I can never escape the feeling that these kinds of songs are con jobs of sorts, using confrontational, inflammatory language to give the audience the illusion that they're participating in something vital and provocative, despite the fact that the singer is already reasonably sure that an overwhelming majority of his audience has pre-approved the message of the song. This song was the absolute low point of the show when I saw it live, its hollow "shared moment" feeling like a self-congratulatory applause grab no different from "made it to the ocean, smoked a joint in a tree."

I think that may understate the need to feel like you're both a part of something bigger and that your cause is righteous. This isn't a song that's supposed to persuade anyone. It's written for the already converted, to let them know that they're not crazy and they're not alone.

That's different than a cheap pop with a cheap drug/name dropping reference. That's fleeting and disposable. But, done properly, you'll walk out of a song like here's to the state feeling just a little bit more empowered than you did before it started.

Whereas No More probably made me more supportive of the Iraq war.

Still the best somewhat recent Ed solo effort to date vs. the ukulele album and the other one offs like Better Days, etc.

I voted Guaranteed, followed closely by Setting Forth. In fact, I might go back and switch to Setting Forth.

i remember being pleasantly surprised by the album, and it's certainly grown on me over the years. a pretty solid effort start to finish, i feel.

picking a favorite for the poll was between rise, hard sun, and society, and i went with rise. it's one of those songs that whenever it comes on i just stop and listen. it still gives me a positive, emotional response.

In the park on a day more like July than October playing ITW.

It's such a great little record. Especially when you've forgotten it and come back to it

A joint in a tree is always much preferred over just a smoke in a tree. I think Ed just really likes weed nowadays.

I don't find "made it to the ocean, smoked a joint in a tree" to be much different from "small my table, sits just two/three/four, (me and beth)" except that he's referencing weed rather than his girlfriend.

I have a love/hate with this one one.....well maybe not love but its a nice little album that I enjoy on occasion but it set Eddie down the horrible path to adult contemporary.

If he can put together an album like this in just a few weeks and with one film as the frame he has to fill in..

he should have had the balls to pursue a proper solo career parallel to Pearl Jam even as early as when the internal dynamic issues began 2 decades ago. It would have been wiser and therapeutic for the band.

The big winner is Hard Sun. The rest is a little threadbare, although as others have said it's a bit constrained due to the soundtrack format. But some of the other stuff comes off feeling like half an idea.
