With musical shades of “Wildflowers”-era Tom Petty, the strident, guitar-driven “Long Way” finds Vedder narrating a tale of a man haunted by a lost love who “left but never went away,” as he attempts “not to awaken the voice of regret in his ear.” Accentuating the Petty vibes, former Heartbreakers member Benmont Tench contributes Hammond B3 organ. The track is rounded out by accompaniment from Watt on guitar and bass, former Red Hot Chili Peppers member Josh Klinghoffer on guitar and piano and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith on drums.
Definitely wearing his influences on his sleeve - very Petty, but also with some REM guitar tones in there too. Pretty dull IMO. I'll be interested to see what will turn up on Earthling - I'd imagine Out of Sand will be on there, plus the recent charity singles he released. Any indication when The Haves is going to be released?

it's not doing a lot for me at the moment, that chorus is bland, but the production is nice and it's played well enough (Chad could be doing more but I guess that's the style); Counting Crows is doing this kinda thing better
love the title of the album though, so we'll see what happens! I'm intrigued
