i had a whole tirade against Surf and Mickey's positioning of me as a deadnamer, but I got caught up in parenting stuff and then the thread got deleted. KD is maybe absorbing some of my simmering rage.

Also the first Foos album features some of Dave's best melodies. "Exhausted" is loud and fuzzy but it's also very beautiful

Not worth it.

What a great song.

Ha, FWIW I did not sense rage or hostility in your reply at all, and even if you were taking a backhanded jab at my tastes I still thought the sequence of posts was funny. I didn't really think you were though.

I just meant that they leaned into the melodic stuff, with a big rawk vocal, more than the naval-gazing garage vibes of their debut, where you'd gotta squint to really appreciate the melodies.

I was 12 when the first Foos album came out, so my tastes were pretty pliable -- not every song pointed me down a path I'd follow on a micro level (i.e. I've never actively sought out bands whose entire MO was songs like "Weenie Beenie," even though I get a kick out of that song), but the patchwork quilt of the whole thing has always been very enjoyable to me.

Truth be told it was probably albums like this, Siamese Dream, etc. that trained my ears to listen through murk and feedback to find melody, craft, etc., unwittingly learning in the process to find the murk and feedback pleasurable in itself, even though I wasn't aware of it in those terms as it was happening.

But by the same token, if late-era Foos has Elvis Costello-level melodies going on, I need to listen immediately!

 honestly wasn’t taking any swipes, no simmering rage here at all.

Loved the part re: feedback and murk — I agree this was a gateway album of sorts in that regard!

Foos melodies are not nearly as good as EC’s best stuff, don’t get your hopes up!

I never thought of it that way, but you are exactly right.

I've been spinning that first record this week and remembering how much I loved it.

I recognize that it’s too soon to crack jokes, but I couldn’t help but picture Dave tearing through the giant poster on which this was theoretically printed, huge shredding guitar sound, heavy riff coming for a few bars, before the radio-friendly hook takes over. Maybe some pyrotechnics.

I knew you'd say something mean but I figured it would be about his singing

Ok I just listened to one verse and one chorus and I think he did a great job! Are those live drums or a plug-in?

The serial killer thing was just a lame shit post but I guess the serious mean thing I would add is that he makes the classic “I’m a sensitive male singer” face for every frame I saw.

It's Taylor's original drums, isolated with some software (no official stems have been released)
