I once played Sweet Caroline at a country fair after the drummer for some country singer couldn't show so I got a gig. I was 19 and I remember some guy complimenting me on both my playing and my soundgarden tshirt. Weird times. Also doing a 90 minute show with no rehearsal was tough. I went off notes and knew less than 20% of the material.

I like some Neil Diamond. His early Bang recordings are indispensable '60's pop, and there is a lot of songwriting expertise in his music even as it disappears further down the halls of irredeemable schlock. He knows his medium, and his music is stronger for it; other schlocksters like Billy Joel are constantly battling these literary temptations that just exceed their grasp, and falling flat as a result. A lot of his stuff doesn't appeal to me, but a well-chosen best-of mix would be excellent.
