went to see Bill Callahan last night in Tulsa. i didn't even know he was playing until i saw someone casually mention it on twitter mid-day. it's a 90min drive from our house to Tulsa, and it was a free outdoor show, celebrating the 10th anniversary of a park--Guthrie Green. it was a no-brainer to make the drive. we arrived at 6:30, and set up our camp chairs on the lawn, about 30-40ft from the stage, right in the center. there were a couple of other bands playing, and we didn't know what time anyone was going on. we just knew things kicked off at 7p. while we were looking at food options for us and the kids, i looked at the stage and said to my wife, "that's Bill Callahan right there." He picked up a guitar and checked his pedals, and then some guy stepped up to a mic on the left side of the stage. He thanked everyone for coming to celebrate, and then he asked if anyone was familiar with Smog, and finally, he introduced Bill. I was so happy he was playing first. It was only Bill, with some loop pedals and a little cymbal (?) on the stage floor he occasionally tapped with his foot.
this was the third time i've seen him. the other two were a full band. i think one was my favorite though. he played a mix of Smog and BC songs and a Hank Williams Jr. song. I actually recorded the set on my phone, and it came out decent. If anyone is interested, let me know. I'm happy to share. The first song (Riding for the Feeling) is cut because i started a little late. Also, you might hear me tell my dog to sit once or twice. Other than that, it's not too bad for an outdoor recording on an iPhone.
note: none of the tracks are separated.
I'll post the full set here once i'm through listening. i didn't jot it down as it was happening.

I went and saw Midnight Oil last weekend and they were epic. Their last tour by all accounts. The version of Kosciusko they played was possibly the best ever single live song performance I've witnessed.
I was hoping for One Country but didn't get it. I believe they did however play exactly that as their last song on the last date of their last tour a few days later. I need to check that on YouTube I think.
Went to Hunters and Collectors tonight with my brother. They were fantastic and played a few tunes I wasn't expecting. They opened with a cracking version of Talking to a Stranger, but the surprise for me was them cracking out This Morning in its full glory.

5 stars.
Midnight Oil was really great when they played in New York in June. Shame they don’t keep going.
