Bon Scott is one of the all time great front men. Back then ACDC were a straight ahead rock and rhythm and blues band. Fantastic stuff indeed.

With Bon, AC/DC had a more playful, loose, raw energy. By the time Brian came around, I think they felt more serious / less playful, and with the exception of a few songs (especially the Flick Of the Switch album), became much more formulated and polished.

Honestly, to someone not familiar with AC/DC, I don't know if a lot of folks would necessarily know the difference between Bon's last album (Highway to Hell) and Brian Johnson's first 3 albums (Back In Black, For Those About To Rock, and Flick Of The Switch).

Lyrically, I felt Bon was more sly, more witty, more playful and had a darker sense of humor. Plus, when they started out AC/DC wasn't rich (like they were by the time Brian joined), and a lot of the lyrics are gritty / working man kind of stuff. For example, "ain't no fun waiting around to be a millionaire" or "got myself a Cadillac, but can't afford the gasoline".

My wife has no idea that ACDC had two singers. When she hears Brian she just keeps saying how much he sucks. When she hears Bon she sings along. There must be something there. Brian's voice is more abrasive I guess. I like both guys.

That "Let there be rock" Video is hilarious. Spinal Tap could not have done a better job.

Bon-era AC/DC were far from bombastic.

Dirty, mean, mighty unclean - yes. "High-sounding; high-flown; inflated; pretentious" - certainly not.

ACDC was one of a smallish number of bands that were given a lot of airtime on the radio stations when I was a kid- late 70s through 80s mainly, and I was too young to have any real appreciation of them during their heyday, but they were always present during my teenage years.
so while I can't claim to be a huge fan, I grew up listening to their music, and still enjoy it now. that noted, there was something more wild about them with Bon Scott as the lead singer - which was good for their music...

I like post Bon Scott ACDC, but they grew up some by then... not in a bad way, just different.

Brian Johnson's voice on their last few albums is hilarious. Sounds like a grumpy grandma on helium.

Nah, AC/DC definitely seems like the sort of corny bullshit Spenno would hate.

Jailbreak is one of my all time favorite songs. The Bon Scott version. The live version that is on that box set with Johnson singing is so disappointing.

Man I love that song, and love Bon Scott-era AC/DC.

I'm generally the first person to scream "cornball" or "cheesy", but I don't see that in early AC/DC.
