They are the sixth band I most want to see live, after Fugazi, Fugazi, Fugazi, Fugazi, and Fugazi. What're your favorite Tortoise records? Least favorite?
Well, my friend gave me a copy of Seneca years ago, and that is the album that got me into the band, so that always has a special place in my heart. But I also really love:
Tortoise Standards It's All Around You
Wow, I almost never want to hear S/T these days. But those other two records are excellent. I'd say TNT is my favorite, with It's All Around You being my second favorite. That album is just epic.
I'm surprised you've never gotten to see Tortoise, Trag. I caught them in Buffalo in 2009, at the beginning of the Beacons of Ancestorship tour. A bunch of new material was played, so they weren't super tight, but were by no means sloppy, either. The only disappointment, for me, was not getting "I Set My Face to the Hillside" on the set.
Also, I'm curious, was the S/T album your first exposure to the band? For me, it was one of the last I heard prior to Beacons being released (I got into them around 2006 or so). I didn't really get it at first, but it's been better and better as time passes. TNT will always be my favorite, followed closely by Standards and Millions Now Living Will Never Die.

Also, trag, big fan of Tortoise right here.

My buddy saw the BoA tour, said they were excellent. I missed a lot of opportunities to see them, because I wasn't a fully committed fan until recently. This first thing I ever heard was the UNKLE remix of DJed, and then I bought TNT when that came out...And then nothing for many years. When BoA came out, I went whole hog on their discography. Started listening to them constantly, and now I'm a dedicated fan. But I wasn't too interested yet in seeing them live when BoA dropped, and none of The Catastrophist shows have been anywhere near me. I'd rank 'em like this:
TNT It Is All Around You Standards MNLWND The Catastrophist Beacons of Ancestorship S/T A Lazarus Taxon In the Fishtank
I'd say everything except the last three are indispensable. And then I still haven't heard The Brave and the Bold, nor Rhythms, Resolutions, and Clusters.
