I would expect that someone like Joey would appreciate the pop merits of the masterpiece that "Call Me Maybe" is.
I've been thinking about this a lot now that we're actually talking about it. I certainly don't hate the song. I just don't think much of it outside of it's catchy-ness. It's catchy as fuck. I don't disagree with anything Jorge (or anyone else) has said about the merits of the song per se, but for some reason it grates on me more than I'd like it to. Maybe it's her voice? Again, I don't hate it. I like to dance to it. I find it endearing (for largely external reasons, but still), and I do appreciate that it is an unabashed pop song.
I hate this type of music so goddamn much so I hate it and I wont appreciate it for its unabashed pop sensibilities. Michael Jackson had fucking tasty jams that were the cream of the crop pop but they at least were INTERESTING.

I think it's pretty pretentious to rate a song on its "goals and ambitions" over how it actually fucking sounds.
Its goals and ambitions are discernible based on how it sounds, and I've pointed to specific (and pretty much only) sonic elements to explain why I think it doesn't work
I can understand your disdain for the garish elements, but I do love the instrumentation in the contrasting chorus -- to me it has a brooding element similar to the beat in Kendrick's "Blacker the Berry". As Noel Gallagher would say, I couldn't give a fuck less about the lyrics. (and that's my bad)
