So they are playing this awful Absurd song on tour and ive seen a few live clips.

Questions: When there are these vocal backing tracks being utilized (the axl screaming dumb shit) does that mean they are playing to a click track so that the backing tracks can be utilized appropriately? And if so, is the drummer the only being using a click track? Or do all musicians in the band utilize the click track?

Also, how the fuck can a drummer hear a click track in their monitor and still hear everything else enough? Or do they not?

QUESTIONS!

It's literally just a click. It doesn't have to be loud to cut through with in-ear monitors.

Im just always intrigued with how some bands do this. I know GnR have zero sound on stage so im sure its not a big deal. Im curious to hear ech individuals in ear monitor mix.

there's a U2 recording from one of the Boston shows in 2001 that was taken from Larry Mullen's mix, you can hear the click throughout the recording

I get the sense that more and more bands are doing the click track thing these days. I'm of two minds on it -- it does sort of take away from the "we are creating a brand new thing on stage" thing that's part of the appeal of live music. But I also saw a recent live video from Green Day's stadium tour and Tré Cool -- a guy who is, by all accounts, a pretty good drummer -- was rushing and then dragging throughout the entire song, an extremely wonky performance. So I dunno

Dialed in setlists. No changes. Dialed in performances, No spontaneity. Sounds awful. I imagine the preparation for such a tour would also be mind numbing.

The Cure have been playing to click tracks for about 20 years and Jason still doesn't play the songs right.

i'm really exicted for hardschool. its crazy to think about the first time hearing that 20 second clip back in 2004ish (I think?). I spent a good ten years convinced it wasn't even a real clip of the band but wanted it to be so bad because the song sounded really cool.

then we finally got it in the village sessions leaks.

i really hope it drops on friday

Its out. Its way more similar to their output from the 80s...and Axl sounds really cool in the chorus.

Yeah I would say the chorus def sounds like Use Your Illusion era Axl. The verse sounds more Chinese Democracy era. Like most modern rock recordings it sounds rather sterile but its not bad.

I am not interested in them taking old recordings and adding some new shot and releasing it and calling it new music.

I’m interested to hear what they would write today. Even though axl would sound worse…

i like this one a lot, as far as recent GnR goes. The drums are pretty lifeless, feels overly quantized. But it's a good song that captures some of the UYI energy without leaning too hard into the shit production choices of Chinese Democracy.
