Benji is my first exposure to Kozelek beyond a few of his Modest Mouse covers (of which I wasn't really a fan), but I'm loving it. Some uncomfortable lyrics here and there ("Dogs" is a good example) but I think that might be part of the point--the unfiltered honesty of these songs is really affecting.

How much of the Benji praise is really hype? I mean its a great record, so good to hear WIll Oldham on backup, but Among the Leavesis just as good and touches upon many of the same subjects as Benji does.

much of it. great stories/raw honesty, but it's like reading the same short story/obituary over and over upon further listens...

musically and melodically it just doesn't even touch the highs of April or Ghosts of the Great Highway

don't get me wrong, i think Benji is an amazing piece of art, but for me it doesn't have much replay value.

I somehow missed that he re-worked this for the Vanilla Sky soundtrack. So beautiful.

This song.

So much that I can't say to you
My voice shakes from the hurt that I hide
Ashamed of my existence
And of my petty often wounded pride

I'd like to come home to see you
And to catch your sickness by the bedside
But then you'd know how much I really need you

All the love in an instant
Makes my life stop
But then my hate for you
Makes my feelings altogether drop

If only I were blind to your selfish fling
And your desperate cause
And didn't press you for the details
That threaten my physical flaws

I'd like to come home to see you
And embrace your illness under soft light
But then you'd know how much I really need you

All the love in an instant
Makes my life stop
But then my hate for you
Makes my feelings altogether drop

So much that I can say to you
With affection that I burn inside
You're aching from the distance
Avoiding strain that's running still alive

If only I could heal you
In the sprinkling of the ocean side
But then you'd know how much I really love you

All the love in an instant
Makes my life stop
But then my hate for you
Makes my feelings altogether drop

Actually started reading THE NIGHT STALKER after listening to this album ad nauseam.

Good read.

I just binged purchased a bunch of Mark Kozelek, Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters stuff a few weeks ago but have not had the time to sit down and absorb it yet. That is my Labor day weekend project.

My buddy's band covers Glenn Tipton and it's wonderful.

Enjoy the journey, friend. Koz is a national treasure.

I only know a handful of songs so I'm excited to say the least.
