The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
I can't not associate this musical movement with the also somewhat recent vape-ing fad. How many of you vape? All of you? I'm sure tommy does after he quit cigs and Burt and LV definitely seem like vapers.
I vape CBD (non-THC marijuana) oil; I've posted about this in the Marijuana thread at length. Not daily. Prolly once every ten days or so.
Yeah yeah we all know. You made sure of that.
I don't get the subtext, but I detect negativity. Can you be more clear?

Kaius is a monster
Ha. I don't think anyone on here is a monster. But I don't speak sarcasm. In real life and RM life, I wear my heart on my sleeve -- I say what I mean, I ask the questions I'm curious about, etc. Sometimes it's difficult for me to connect with folks on here when they get snarky. I embrace criticism, but I would just prefer that you're clear about it.
That's why I enjoy LV and McP so much. They are ornery, but crystal clear.

suck my qoq
See, I don't know what to make of this... Does Kaius really dislike me for some reason? Is he just trolling me? Is there a subtext to the spelling of qoq that is over my head? Whatever the intent, it's lost on me.

The answer is "absolutely nothing".
Of all the different types of music millennials create and consume, Vaporwave may be the most difficult for non-millennials to relate to or understand, because it is so specifically built around nostalgia for people of a certain age and upbringing.
That said, it's not merely trying to stir warm, nostalgic feelings; that would be meaningless. Instead, it is examining nostalgia itself. It's usage of samples - easy listening, soft rock, '80s pop - is integral to what makes it unique, and to what it's exploring. It's all about taking innocuous pop culture detritus from a certain era and transfiguring it into something that is, as Burt described, "emotionally devastating" (if it connects with you). It's almost the very concept of nostalgia made concrete: pieces of the past that have no inherent emotional value, but are distorted into something poignant in one's mind.

Didn't DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, UNKLE, et. al. already do this?

No. Plunderphonics was it's own thing; it's not the end-all-be-all of sample-based music. And it was never about nostalgia. Vaporwave is very different aesthetically and ideologically. It's a much more specific and cohesive movement.

The speed with which you delivered this defense, it's like you already had it queued up... Either that or you're some sort of RM savant.
