R.I.P. Lemmy Kilmister, Motörhead frontman dead at 70

Rock 'n' roll legend had been battling a series of health issues

Lemmy Kilmister, founding member and frontman of Motörhead. has died. He was 70 years old.

The band's official Facebook confirmed Kilmister's passing, "There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer."

"He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it’s way down the street, with his family," the statement continued. "We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words. We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD. Have a drink or few. Share stories. Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself. HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT."

Many of his heavy metal brethren took to Twitter to pay tribute to the inimitable artist. Radio personality Eddie Trunk was the first to report Kilmister's passing, "Sorry to report that I have confirmed Lemmy has passed away just now at the age of 70. RIP to a true original icon of rock."

"Lost one of my best friends, Lemmy, today," Ozzy Osbourne tweeted. "He will be sadly missed. He was a warrior and a legend. I will see you on the other side."

Lemmy had been suffering from a number of well-publicized health issues, including hematoma and had been fitted with an implantable defibrillator to correct an irregular heartbeat.

Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Kilmister was born Staffordshire, England in 1945. Inspired to become a musician after seeing The Beatles perform in concert, Lemmy spent his 20s playing in a variety of bands, and also served as a roadie in the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

In 1972, he was hired to play bass in the UK space rock group Hawkwind, despite having no previous experience on the instrument. He quickly honed his skills, helping shape the band’s sound on critically acclaimed albums such Space Ritual, while also signing lead vocals on the song “Silver Machine”, which peaked at No. 3 on the UK charts.

Lemmy was lead vocalist, bassist, principal songwriter and the founding, and the only constant member of Motörhead since the band’s formation in 1975. To date, Motörhead have released twenty studio albums and achieved 30 million in sales worldwide.

Motörhead saw far more commercial success in the UK, though they achieved a cult following in the US. Their ferocious hard-rock style rejuvenated the metal genre in the late 1970s and inspired everyone from Metallica to Guns N’ Roses to Dave Grohl. Albums such as Ace of Spades, Orgasmatron, and Rock N’ Roll were critically lauded, though ironically the band’s only Grammy Award came via a cover of Metallica’s “Whiplash”, which they recorded for a tribute CD.

Lemmy’s outlandish behavior further fueled his icon status. He was fired from Hawkwind after being arrested at the Canadian border for drug possession, yet his appetite for drugs and alcohol remained a constant throughout most of his career. He famously claimed he had drunken a bottle of Jack Daniel’s every day since turning 30, and he was also a proponent of amphetamines.

Lemmy also dabbled in acting with cameos in films such as Airheads, Hardware, and even Foo Fighters’ video for “White Limo”.

Damn, I saw the once, really fun and intense show. His music really brought punks and headbangers together.

He's a guy I respect a lot, but won't claim I've listened to a ton outside of one specific Motörhead phase.

Never knew he did a stint in Hawkwind until today. That's pretty cool.

one of my favorite concert memories was seeing motorhead at a weekend festival in '98 or '99 and somehow finding myself down front on the rail, passing random bottles of whiskey and vodka all around, with lemmy and his mole just 6ft in front of me. i've never been a "must be in the front" type concert goer and can probably count on one hand how many times i've actually been on the rail/first row of a show let alone in a festival setting. so for one of those to be fuckin' motorhead just makes that memory stand out even more.

i know he had health stuff pop up this year, but i felt he'd be one of those who'd live hard til he was 100. sad to see him go.

Metallica, Alice Cooper Remember 'One of a Kind in Rock' Lemmy Kilmister

Tom Morello, Slayer also praise metal icon

By Jon Blistein December 29, 2015

Alice Cooper remembered late Motörhead mastermind Lemmy Kilmister as a "one-of-a-kind in rock 'n' roll" in a touching note posted to Facebook.

"He was innovative, true to his art and continually relevant even though he never cared about being relevant," Cooper wrote. "He was always creating and redefining hard rock and the role of bass within it. Offstage, he was a gem. I can't think of anyone who didn't adore Lemmy. He was such an original character in rock, and I will truly miss seeing him out on the road."

Cooper extended his condolences to Kilmister's family, bandmates and "rock fans everywhere," adding to the growing number of tributes pouring in from across the musical spectrum.

Elsewhere, Metallica paid their respects to Kilmister with a note on Facebook that read, "Lemmy, you are one of the primary reasons this band exists. We are forever grateful for all of your inspiration. Rest In Peace." The metal outfit also shared a live clip of them performing Motörhead's "Too Late, Too Late" alongside Kilmister.

"I'm so glad we were able to get some quality time with him recently," Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo tells Rolling Stone. "He was really the coolest, the smartest, and funniest gent I've ever met. R.I.P Lemmy! Killed by Death - Immortalized by Rock and Roll."

Motörhead and Metallica have a long shared history, with the former picking up their first Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2005 for their cover of Metallica's "Whiplash." Metallica also covered Motörhead's "Overkill" for their 1998 covers album, Garage Inc..

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello also chimed in on Twitter, calling Kilmister "a true rock icon, singular in voice and spirit. Metal flags fly at half mast tonight as we salute the incomparable Ace Of Spades." Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea wrote, "Lemmy got let in on the big secret. One of the greatest rockers of all time. Amazingly unique incredible bass player. My hero."

"Lemmy was a rock and roll legend, icon, superstar, ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!" Slayer guitarist Kerry King tells Rolling Stone. "We will never see another like him, and he left a gigantic hole in the music we all love. Sad, sad day. Cheers to my friends in Motörhead, my thoughts are with you. Lemmy- reign in peace."

WWE Raw also paid tribute to Kilmister during their broadcast Monday. Amongst his myriad non-rock related interests — including slot machines and Nazi memorabilia — Kilmister was an avid wrestling fan and maintained close ties to the sport, with Motörhead performing at several WrestleManias and star Triple H using the band's "The Game" as his entrance music.

The band has released a hand written statement on the back of a scrunched up napkin from the "Tits Out Topless Tavern" stating they were "devastated" and were "celebrating Lemmy's life in the manner he would have wanted". The note was accompanied with a perfumed g-string and a shot of Gentleman Jack.
