Finding Wildflowers is out on Spotify today. I don't believe these were on Spotify previously, only the deluxe physical media comp.

They're good.

They were somewhere in the deluxe. Vinyl only maybe? I’ve had digital files since then I set came out.

It’s in the 9 LP set.

They are records 8 and 9 of the vinyl set that was only available at independent retailers.

Yeah, this is just reminding me how outstanding Tom Petty was. I mean, these alternative takes are great - I mean even if this was the album it would be in my top 10 albums in life. Wildflowers is just unbelievable.

That’s throwing me back into the tailspin of another Tom Petty binge. I listened to the first two albums this morning. I am just about convinced that the entirety of both records would have been radio ready at that time. And even those one or two songs that may not have played great on the radio are phenomenal tracks on their own.

was listening to the finding wildflowers vinyl set and got to the alt take of house on the woods, which has a seemingly out of place jam section in the middle that i thought to myself sounded very much like the grateful dead. i read the liner notes after listening to the record and sure enough rubin notes that mike campbell had been deep diving into the dead at the time. breakdown happens about 2:15.

Still in this kick and going back through nearly everything again...

Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough). This is one of the toughest albums of his to figure out. The songs are mostly pretty good, but there’s just something missing here. Jammin’ Me, Runaway Trains, Think About Me, Ain’t Love Strange, And Let Me Uo (I’ve Had Enough) are all strong additions. It’s a good album. Why do you think it seems like something still doesn’t fit? The production? The fact that it follows the experimental (for Tom Petty) Southern Accents and the steamroller that is Full Moon Fever? This is always the forgotten release for me (along with Long After Dark which is a fantastic album mushed between Hard Promises and Southern Accents).

I know Petty was feeling burnt out at this point and this album maybe reflects a little of that - his creative muse sparking with the Traveling Wilburys and Full Moon Fever to come. I am as just thinking about this album needing a proper moment.

Let Me Up was before Full Moon Fever.

Let Me Up was before Full Moon Fever.

He noted that next as it is to come.

I think everything on the album that follows Jammin' Me just comes off as uninspired. I feel like the title track had a recycled lick or two as well but I haven't listened in a while.

Sorry I meant to say it was sandwich between.

I agreed with that on first listen and it tracks with I think both his biography and the Running Down a Dream documentary that Tom was in need of inspiration by this point and also started hanging out in that LA circle at the time that lead to Traveling Wilburys.

But hearing the album again I feel like I got more out of it. In fact, now that I am still listening through, there just seems to be next to no wasted album space in Petty’s catalogue (second time running in sequence - on Into the Great Wide Open).
