Here we go! The third artist catalogue journey for me begins with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I should note at the outset that I’ve heard probably 75% of his catalogue and am very attached to it. The self-titles record was not one of them. I have only heard the obvious singles “Breakdown” and “American Girl”.
The debut is really fantastic. Rockin Aound (With You) and Hometown Blues are immediate favorites and fall a bit outside his bread and butter, and nearly the rest of the album is just pure rock n roll genius. My only qualms with this album are the high keyboard key in Fooled Again that hurt my ears and Anything That’s Rock n Roll, which is the only throwaway on the album for me.

You’re Gonna Get It is of course another solid outing from Tom as a sophomore album. This one gets to the heart of Tom Petty’s Sound, whereas the self-titled Feels out a bunch of different sounds, this is mostly straight forward rock album that delivers at just about every corner. In addition to the obvious singles as highlights, I really enjoyed When the Time Comes, You’re Gonna Get It, and No Second Thoughts...but there’s no weak spot here.

Damn the Torpedoes - this might be perfect Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in terms of his earlier years. Every song is a highlight. This is one of those albums, like Born to Run, where sometimes I wish I was there at that time just to experience it in real time as a fan of rock music.

Combination of cleaning and yard work got me through a bunch of Tom Petty albums today after I posted the last one. Quick thoughts:
Hard Promises: I would think it nearly impossible to follow Damn the Torpedoes but this one is almost as good. Granted this is one of the albums I have heard a bunch of times, but today Kings Road, The Nightwatchman and Criminals Kind really stuck out.
Long After Dark: first time through this one and I just enjoyed it from start to finish. It was a fun album that just blew by.
Southern Accents: a big left turn! A horn section, much bigger production and sound but still quite enjoyable. Rebels, Southern Accents, and Make It Better were great, but nothing tops one of my childhood favorites, Don’t Come Around Here No More, which I know a ton of people hate - but I have always loved that song and that crazy video.

Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough) - This is very interesting because there’s a lot of good songs here but the production and a few decisions here makes this album not so great. Maybe it is that the drum sounds very synthetic, or the use of keys isn’t so hot. But something is off on this album. It reminds me in a lot of ways of the similar qualms I have with Bruce’s Tunnel of Love, which is from the same time period.
Somehow though, other 80s flourishes come with tremendous success on Full Moon Fever, so go figure.
