Roger that.

It'll take another few days to get everything ready, but I'm looking forward to it. And I think I'm getting his book for my birthday in a couple of days so I'll be immersed in Petty for the next little while.

Finished the doc today. They spend, like, 30 minutes on Howie's descent. While not outright stated, it's made abundantly clear that he died from drugs.

Ok. So, I listened to the first three albums this week. This is the first time I've actually gone thru and done a review of anything. Especially on a track-by-track basis. But Here goes:

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
1) Rockin' Around (With You) - A fun little number that serves as a nice introduction to the entity that is TP&TH. Different from most rock and pop of the time. I enjoy this one. A solid B.
2) Breakdown - Don't think I realized this one was so early in his catalogue. A classic. Very solid. Very strong songwriting. A
3) Hometown Blues - Now his southern roots are on display. A nice little ditty. Fun. B
4) The Wild One, Forever - I had heard this one before but never paid much attention to it. After actually giving it a chance, it's my favorite track on the album. Tom really puts on his Springsteen hat and, for my money, wears it better than Bruce. Love this song. A+
5) Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll - A typical rock riff. Nothing special, but not bad either. B-
6) Strangered in the Night - Interesting song. Like the rolling riff. It does remind me a bit of a Dwight Yoakum song I can't remember the name of, but I like this better. A-
7) Fooled Again (I Don't Like It) - I do like it. Mid-tempo groove. Benmont's B3 really adds to the mood of the song. Great song. A
8) Mystery Man - Hate this song. It's like a bad Jimmy Buffet song. The only one on the album I don't like. F
9) Luna - Slow shuffle. I dig it. A little longer than it really needed to be. B
10) American Girl - What else can be said? Great track. A

Overall a very enjoyable record. If a bought it in 1976, I would've been back for more. Already showing great promise of being a superb lyricist.

You're Gonna Get It

1) When the Time Comes - Opens up with a riff a bit reminiscent of I Can See for Miles by The Who ( and, of course later, Breakerfall). Not a bad song. Not a very strong follow-up to the last album, tho. C+
2) You're Gonna Get It - Really like this one. It seems a bit anticlimactic. Like the chorus should lead to some incredibly dynamic part of the song never comes. The bridge doesn't really go anywhere.Still, I like the song. B+
3) Hurt - Middle of the road. It's ok. C
4) Magnolia - mid-tempo rocker. An ok tune. Like the wah-wah in it. B
5) Too Much Ain't Enough - Really cool slide riff with a bluegrass drum beat. And a phase shifter on the slide? Count me in. A-
6) I Need to Know - Classic track. Great lyrics. Cool riff. A
7) Listen to Her Heart - I read somewhere that Petty wrote this after Ike Turner was making moves on his wife. Listening with that in mind, it made me like it even more. This has always been one of my favorites. A+
8) No Second Thought - An intro that makes you think you've put on some Indian album. A nice acoustic number. B+
9) Restless - an interesting riff. I think Stone may have been listening to this when he wrote Brother. Maybe the reason he hated Brother so much is he lifted the lick in the verse from Petty's lick in the verse of this one. B
10) Baby's a Rock 'n' Roller - really don't like the production on this one. Very thin. Maybe that takes away from the song a bit for me. Not a big fan. C-

Overall, not as strong as the debut, but not a bad record. I would've been on the fence on continuing with them. The next one would have to be strong to keep me as a fan.

Damn the Torpedos

And it is! Songwriting and even production is ramped up on this one. The sound is much fuller.

1) Refugee - Probably the first song I can remember hearing and liking by them. Great fucking song. A+
2) Here Comes My Girl - Good tune. Not my favorite by any means, but very strong. B+
3) Even the Losers - Great one. One of my favorites. Like the lyrics and the music. A
4) Shadow of a Doubt ( A Complex Kid) - I really like this one. Really dig the main riff and then dropping into that minor chord in the verse. Really like it. A-
5) Century City - I can't say I dig this one too much. I know it's his big Fuck You to the record company. The melody of the reverse reminds me of Pink Cadillac. C
6) Don't Do Me Like That - A tune I had no idea was earlier than this album until I watched the documentary. Haven't listened to the Mudcrutch version yet. A Petty classic. A
7) You Tell Me - Another mid-tempo groove. It's ok. B
8) What Are You Doin' in My Life - An opening that momentarily made me think I had gone back to I Need to Know. This one's ok. Nothing special. The chorus is the best part. B-
9) Louisiana Rain - A pointless intro that seems to last forever. Already soured on the track. After the song proper comes on, it gets no better. A mid-80's country song. This would be good for Alan Jackson or Alabama. D

So, overall only 2 songs on three albums I really can't stand. Not bad. And I've found some good deep cuts I can go back to. After Torpedos, he has a lot to live up to.

To be continued...

The next is his masterpiece. It's a long rollercoaster ride downhill from that one with The Heartbreakers.

It's been very interesting. Lyrically, he hits upon some of the same themes as Springsteen, but I like these a lot better. I've always felt BS has had an air of pretentiousness about him and I don't get that at all from TP.

I don't think I'd agree that he is LITERALLY the coolest. But in the spirit that chud meant it... yeah, he's the coolest.

Nah, he only seems like a dork. He's like the guy in high school that you think is a dork at first, based on the fact that he's kind of ugly and doesn't follow the in crowd most of the time. But by junior year he's fucking running the place.
