Was listening to The Argument the other day, and I got sort of bummed out: After years of releasing crappy-to-decent-sounding albums, they finally make a record that sounds awesome...and then they go on indefinite hiatus. My biggest problem with everything pre-Red Medicine is the recording quality; everything just sounds sort of boxy and lo-fi muddy.
I can pretty easily rank the first several:
1. End Hits 2. The Argument 3. Red Medicine 4. In on the Killtaker
After that, I'm not sure.
Also, I've got the Albini sessions for In On the Killtaker, if anyone is interested in those. They are interesting. Just PM me and I'll get them to you.
Listened to a ton of Fugazi since I wrote this. I'm swapping End Hits and The Argument. Where the former is a favorite album from my early 20s, I can admit now that the album sort of goes off the rails in the last stretch. But The Argument is a flawless album, front-to-back.

The jammy songs at the end of End Hits are my favorite songs by Fugazi.
I can respect that opinion. But I tend to lean towards the more drum-focused songs. As for the back half of End Hits:
Floating Boy: I like this one well enough, but I've got to be in the right mood for it.
Foreman's Dog: I love this song, but it's not of the jammy ones.
Arpeggiator: It's a fun one, but it's sort of middle-of-the-road as far as their instrumentals go.
Guilford Fall: same feelings as Floating Boy. It's around this time that my attention has begun to meander, and I want to reach for something else to listen to.
Pink Frosty: I like this one too, but don't love it.
F/D: This one is almost too intense. If I'm in the right mood, I want to blast it. Otherwise I'm starting to get a headache.
In conclusion: These are all decent songs, with one great song (Foreman's Dog), but it's just too many of them in a row for me.

I'm gonna have to agree with Dev that 2nd half of End Hits is awesome. Especially Floating Boy, Pink Frosty and Closed Captioned. Guilford Fall is my favorite one of them all though.

I was walking down the street from my bus stop a couple of weeks ago and "cashout" came on, and I realized just how terribly and sadly relevant that song is for this town right now.

Yea, I've been listening to The Argument a lot lately too, and that song always sticks out to me now.

Threw on In On the Killtaker today, just to see if anything changed...Nope, still sounds like crap to me. I don't think I'll ever be able to get over the production of their records prior to Red Medicine...
Has anyone dived deep into their bootleg series? Can you recommend a show that sounds great and is heavy on their pre-RM material? I'd love to be able to enjoy those songs more regularly.

I discovered Fugazi through 13 Songs and never got around to collecting any of their music until last year. The demo lp is really good, and I also enjoy Repeater, but stopped at In On The Kill Taker. I plan on starting over with Red Medicine. I love the way they see their Live Recordings through their website, too.
I used to walk by the Dischord house every day on my way to work when I lived in Arlington. Never intentionally, though. These guys are awesome. Fugazi was offered $10 Million by Ahmet Ertegun to sign a contract for Atlantic and turned them down. They didn't want the pressure and liked doing everything on their terms. The same guy that signed Zeppelin loved Fugazi! I always loved that fact.

It's funny that you stopped listening at IOTK -- the next three (four if you count the Instrument Soundtrack) are their best work! You've going to enjoy this run, I think.
I heard that Ian's folks still live in the Dischord house. I seem to remember Dischord making a public request for the fans to stop going by and harassing his 'rents.
