i just listened to it this past week, and i was bored out of my mind. So poppy, bland and i hate the guitar tones. There are a few good songs there, specially the title track, but i pretty much hate it.

If 'Dosed' doesn't make your "good" list there's gonna be trouble.

Listened to By the Way today. Officially putting UL in my #2 and BTW in #3.
I love BTW. It’s bursting with creativity and studio magic in a way that none of their other albums comes close to touching. And as a huge fan of Frusciante in particular, it holds a special place knowing that it was very much “his” record.
But there are four songs that feel like dead weight:
I Could Die For You Midnight Cabron On Mercury
And then two of the best songs — Can’t Stop and Zephyr Song — both got so much radio play that if I never hear them again they’ll be fine.
But more than that, there are a lot of moments on the album that feel overworked. The big production flourishes detract from the human interplay that has always made the band so thrilling for me.
The more relaxed approach to UL is just where I’m at now. I prefer the stripped down, straightforward approach of that album’s mid-tempo groove rockers these days, even if it’s less bittersweet than the heavy Frusciante stuff that marks the bulk of BTW’s strongest material.

yeah i agree with UL being way more relaxed than most of their material. And it was also kinda what i needed, not just from them, but from any of my favorite bands at the time they dropped the album.
I also think its a very strong album from all of them, in the same vein BSSM and Californication are.

finished Rick Rubin podcast with John, later joined by Anthony. Very cool chat. Wish they would have talked more bout the californication sessions....but its always interesting to hear bout the early years too.
Everything about Mother´s Milk and Michael Beinhorn was so interesting. The album always sounded so speed up and quick for me, and that was actually what he was trying to do, and John wasnt feeling it. Really cool info bout those sessions.
Also, Chad really dont giving a shit bout the band in the early days was so funny.

its a wonderful read. So much fun. It also paints the band in those early super crazy years and the weird moments of One Hot Minute and Californication. I loved it.
I gave it to a fucking guy who never gave it back. I should get it again someday, but im guessing ill buy Flea´s before that.
