I think both records are pretty consistent, for better or worse. The only thing that would lend itself to the theory of Canteen being a "leftovers" record is that UL has slightly higher highs. Higher high ground? Hi.

Still haven't given it a full, proper listen, but I liked a lot of the stuff I heard. "Handful" is awesome.
It also seems like there may be at least a couple examples of Anthony in peak 'first draft, nonsensical rhymey' mode. His lyrics and delivery in "Reach Out" made me laugh multiple times. But it's so ridiculous that I can't help but kind of love it.

My assessment of Dream Canteen is the same as with Love Unlimited. I enjoy both records just fine. And they are really inspirational to me, but....perhaps not for the right reasons. Let me explain. When I was about 13 years old I 'discovered' the Peppers. Soon they became my obsession and favorite band. BSSM is almost part of my DNA. I started playing bass because of that record. Mofo, Mothers Milk and One Hot Minute.. I all took it in. And then at the peak of my young fandom they released 'Californication'. By this time I was playing bass for a year orso and Ive studied on that record for months and months. I moved on and the Peppers dropped a bit of my radar. I still think 'BTW' is a great record. When Stadium Arcadium was released I felt that everything started to sound a bit alike. Never had the desire to play along with it. Ok, fast forward to present times. I still play a lot of music in several projects and jamsessions. And ROTDC and LU are inspirational, yes. But mostly because it's sooo undercooked and loose. It's soo simple that It's easy to replicate. With that MM<>BTW stretch they were creatively on another planet if you ask me. How the hell do write such a good song a 'Scar Tissue', 'Soul to Squeeze'. Or how can you funk this hard on 'If you have to ask'. Or that 'Aeroplane' bass solo is so freaking good I will never achieve such levels. But now....These new songs all sound like stuff I could jam of come up with. So yes...finally they are inspirational to me but probably not for the right reasons. Basically for the same reasons that Foo Fighters are an inspiration lol. In the grand scheme of the whole RHCP discography I pile these new records with Stadium Arcadium, Im With you, Im beside (suprisingly good!) and the Getaway. Each has moments that I really like. But overall there's just not enough for me on those records.
